2nd season IL results
« on: November 29, 2018, 11:46:30 PM »
Tennessee Valley built 60 with rice barrel.    Today is opener and thinned out two does this morning.  Lot of time on the range.   Went down to .590 Callahan ball mold with .15 patch.  Mold is throwing a constant 312 grain ball.    Settled on 110 grains with no burn on the patch.   I do appreciate everyone's help this summer and fall with random questions I posted.   Four more tags in my kit!

Nice shooting, those deer look to be in nice shape and should give up some tasty eating.

What county are you in with 2 deer down and four tags to go......  Just wondering.....  I would think you just burned your (1) antlerless and (1) either sex fire arm tags right there....  Or are your other tags for archery...

Yep, a .60 is an excellent hunting round. I have always liked the .58 as the results are about the same. I think I killed the greatest % of my deer with a .62 smooth bore....same results again, BANG!....DEAD!
You did a very fine job. ;D

Good job. They look like good eating.

I wish we could take that many deer here in Colorado. I'm lucky to get one deer tag a year.

So, I guess you are over run with does ?  Lots of good meat there....  Our season down here in Johnson county is off to a slow start.  Don't think I heard one shot yesterday.

To many does where we are!!!!!.   Trying to balance the herd.   Today was just one.  Major storm coming tomorrow so might be rebound on Sunday.  If not next weekend is muzzleloader weekend and better temps.    72 yards today and doe went about 5 steps

Well done, Boater.  Good eating there. Good shooting too - high lung hits seem faster killers with the larger balls than small.

When you make then leak out both sides, even faster.

When I was a growing up (in WV), you had to go to the eastern mountain counties to find a deer. Strictly bucks only seasons for ages. Even there you might hunt the whole two week season and be lucky to see a buck.
Now practically the whole state has deer in almost nuisance numbers, with very liberal doe limits.
We had folks in our old hunt club who could never get used to the idea of culling does, to them it was a great sin to shoot a doe.
It makes little matter to me, they all eat pretty good, and I have more antlers hanging in the shop than I’ll need for knife handles for a while.
Those look like some goood eat’n fat little does, congratulations!

Back in the 1950's getting a deer in season was akin to bagging a T-Rex.
The deer were scarce state wide.Game management has caused a BIG
increase in these critters and they are now common in our city,Huntington WV.
Dead ones along the highways are very common and in some areas they are
a nuisance.

Good shooting and Congrats, P-Boater!

These does look a very nice size and in  very good condition.
We can only take one whitetail a year in this area.

Hunt Pike and DeWitt.   Appreciate all the kind words.   Total was four.  I have yet to get 2nd buck so next weekend going to go strong for IL muzzleloader weekend.    Have three doe tags and one either sex

Bob, a few years back a young cousin of mine was berating his grandfather for the low number of bucks he had bagged in his lifetime, as he bragged about already killing near that number and he was still in his teens. We had to set him straight about how rare an animal the mature buck was in his grandfather’s day.

Congrats! Excellent shooting and fine eating I'm sure! Very envious as we only get one tag per draw system out here. Enjoy your good fortune, you earned it!
