A new threat to the squirrel population
« on: January 26, 2019, 04:44:15 AM »
Howdy folks! A very bad week ended on a very good note today. My friend Gary Tucker delivered what is certain to be a nightmare for all of the tree rats here on Stoner Creek. Starting with the basics. It’s a Cumberland valley Thomas Simpson-Jacob Young inspired rifle. It’s a feather weight. 3/4” .36 caliber x 42” Charlie Burton barrel with some of Freddie Harrison’s famous Stump sugar maple, Chambers Late Ketland lock, Davis triggers. This little gem weighs 6 1/2 lbs. I own some really nice pieces but I cannot get enough of this one.

Really great rifle Wayne. Need to test it out. Come on down and we'll  take a squirrel dog and go for a hunt.

Sounds like a plan! You may want to bring one of those little Feists up here and help us thin out some Fox squirrels.

Stoner your not even going to fire a shot. The tree rats will call out of the tree to lay next to that rifle. She's a beauty.... !  Oldtravler

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

That looks like a sweeeet rifle.  Any squirrel would be proud to be shot with that nice rifle.  My "squirreler" has a 3/4" X 38" X .36cal barrel; it's light and accurate but not as cute as yours.

Simply beautiful.  The finish does that lovely piece of wood justice.  God Bless,   Marc

I hope that some day I can do work half as well as you do.  Really nice, neat squirreler!

Hanshi, Norm - I hope that you didn't say Stoner's rifle was cuter.  You will make YOUR squirreler totally jealous, and she WILL have ways of getting even for you looking longingly at another squirrel gun.  Ya got to treat your rifle like you would treat a woman, with never a hint of betrayal.

If y’all think it looks good in the pictures, just wait til you get it in-hand...it’s a treat!  Wayne’s gonna have to spend extra time tonight polishing off my fingerprints... :o

Great job, Gary!

It's a pretty dainty little thing. Looks small setting next to a .50 rifle. Nice rifle for sure and the wood isn't to bad either. Thanks for bring it to the fort Wayne.

I'm really glad you like it Wayne.  Thanks fellas for all of the nice comments.  I had a blast building that rifle.  Wayne handed me the parts and said to build him a rifle.  I asked what kind and he said whatever I wanted.  Thats just what every builder wants to hear.  I've always been attracted to those Cumberland rifles, so that's what I decided upon.  The real star in this deal was the wood.  I knew it was a nice piece when I was working on it, but when I applied the first coat of finish I was amazed at the figure.  I hope I get the chance to work on another piece like this.

The figure and striping of that wood is amazing!  Truly outstanding and a piece that I'd be proud to take into the woods.
