Finished my Kibler Colonial 54. This is my first build so its not perfect but I love it. Will be out shooting it tomorrow. Wanted a plain look with no frills and little to no shine on the wood. Still need to finish the ramrod though.

RFD I used Kiblers Iron nitrate over tannic acid, then rubbed in many coats of LMF permalyn sealer. Amazing how easy the whole process was, a little spooky using the heat gun but all went well.

whether the aft of the lock plate is proud or not, having the pan flush against the barrel is of more importance to me.

rfd that is right. Very important to have it flush with the barrel. Also once it is there you can't recess the lock any farther anyway.

Was the pre-carved stock not shaped properly to allow the lock to be inlet fully, such as not leaving enough wood height at the rear of the lock mortise? Or was it a matter of being a little too aggressive during final sanding, and taking a little too much off in that area?

You may be able to thin the bolster of the lock plate (and the frizzen width) to allow the lock to seat deeper into it's mortise.

The lock fits just fine thankyou. the photo does make it appear to be too proud but I assure you it is not. I'm sure you are familiar with the round faced lock. And as to thinning the frizzen plate to lower it a minute would be silly at best. It sets tight against the barrel, it shoots extremely well and that is what really matters to me.

Phil, you have a nice looking rifle, a working mans gun so to speak. This is one of those plane is pretty guns. I think you will be happy with it.

Yes, that photo does show it better. Not sure why it looks so proud of the wood in the previous one, optical illusion I guess. Yes, I am familiar with the round faced lock, I have used that particular lock in over a dozen builds. It is not unheard of or "silly" to have to modify a lock slightly at times during a build. If you enjoyed this build, and look to continue with new projects in the coming years, you will gain that knowledge with experience.

Good job on your first build.

what you see in phil's original pic is the shadow of the high round lock plate.

Thanks to all and now that shall be laid to rest. Very possible the curve threw a bit of a shadow that appeared larger than it really is.

It appears to be a very fine rifle to me. I know you said you wanted it plain, but that stock appears to be anything but plain to me. Which grade is that?
