New Old Find Help!
« on: January 27, 2019, 05:20:24 PM »
I picked this rifle up recently and I am looking for opinions on origin. The rifle has the Jamestown look but those who know think the architecture is not North Carolina or at least not Jamestown. The poured pewter nose cap is very well executed and unique. The lock that came with the rifle is not correct so no help there. The signature inlay is unsigned. Any thoughts on origin will be greatly appreciated.

A group from Jamestown, NC moved to Indiana in the mid-1800’s. As a matter of fact, they named their new home Greensboro Township. Davis Gray is the name that comes to mind right now. His guns looked a lot like Jamestown guns, but not quite. I would be looking at some of his guns.

I wonder if all of those inlays were made out of aluminum?

I'd bet german silver. Aluminum inlays usually stay brighter.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
