yah, I suppose you're right. 40 years as a Journyman Carpenter, hasn't taught me anything historic about the wood industry.

I only recall seeing three presentation guns stamped S.Hawken . One is of course the Kennett full stock rifle which is beautiful stripped maple , which is a very early S.HAWKEN marked rifle probably made in 1849 . The other two presentation S.HAWKEN rifles are both engraved with patch boxes and both are stocked in very fancy walnut. They are the only two engraved S.HAWKEN rifles that I've encountered , all the rest of the engraved rifles that I've noted are all from the J.&S.HAWKEN rifle period . I might also mention that all of the J.S.HAWKEN rifles with the rectangular boxes and all engraved along with the tangs etc. have all been stocked in fancy maple .
