Mr. Sheetz and Mr.Shane
« on: February 16, 2019, 01:57:55 PM »
I recently purchased two rifles from Jim Francis.
Jim attributes the flintlock to John Jacob Sheetz (in the time frame from 1815 to 1825)
and the caplock to Benjamin F. Shane, both of Hampshire Co., (West) Virginia.

Thanks to Jim for being a source of nice rifles and to Dennis for his always appreciated help!

Kind regards from Germany, Chris

Glad to see you appreciate Hampshire County Rifles.  I purchased a nice rifle from Jim awhile back and also found him fair to deal with.  Here is a little thing on  Benjamin F Shane, you may have already seen it.  Thanks for posting pictures of your rifles.

Nice looking guns Chris, I especially like the Shetz rifle.

Good info on Shane, I do appreciate the research anyone does on the makes. Being from Virginia I have been a Sheets family fan for many years, here is a link to some info on them from Clay Smith's site:

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Obviously a lot of fine rifles originate in Hampshire County.
Thank you for the extra information!
