Cheap bore light (you may already own)
« on: February 07, 2019, 08:55:19 PM »

Here's a cheap but very useful hint (archers may have) light up arrow nocks (green or clear) as long as they fit (and can slide back out) make great bore lights

Maybe a .25. I don't think it will go into a .22, but it's close.

If you carefully cut/break off the plastic (that holds the string ) you could make it sub 22 cal

Not being an archer, I’ve never seen nocks that light up. I use the tiny lights sold in the freshwater fishing section of any good tackle shop. 1.3 in long 0.17 diameter.

the ones I have will fit the bore of a pellet gun. They show a bright yellow light. Comes in a nice little container to protect them.  They last about twenty hours. That's a lot of bore checking...!  Will be bringing some to the Knoxville show..Oldtravler

I use a led bobber light for night fishing bobbers. Get them at Wally World all day long and it will fit everything from .22 on up. I think they are $2 or something like that. I’ve used mine for about 5 years so far.

At the Raleigh flea market, there is a vendor who sells ink pens with lighted tips.  I remove these lighting units and use them as bore lights.  They will fit into bores as small as .40 caliber.  There is a push-on/push-off button on them.  Sometimes I have to give the rifle a upward jerk to get the "switch" to push on.

I have the fishing lights, but they're always red or green or some color.  I prefer the white light of these pen lighting units.

If it was easy, everyone would do it.

On a lark, I looked up light-up arrow nocks on Amazon.  Ordered a pack of 5 with white lights.  Seems like they are activated by pushing the nock in, and turned off by pulling the nock out (?).  Anyway, I figure I can actually use a couple for bow-hunting, as well as using some as bore lights.

Bones, is that pitting I see at your muzzle?  At 12 to 2 o'clock, it looks like it might be dust, however pitting seems quite visible (surface damage) at 10 to 11:30. (barrel's right side bottom corner is at 12 o'clock.

Nah, but the photo does look like it.  It must have been old dried oil and dust.  I think those photos were from when I first received it and hadn't either fired or cleaned it well yet.

It's an old 70's era rifle built using a Douglas XX  (13/16") .45 caliber barrel and Russ Hamm Bedford lock.  It's a good shooter, too, though the finish turned green over the years.  Aqua Fortis, or something like that... not applied correctly.

Here's a slightly better shot, though there's still a bit of dust from the patches.

I'm cheap. I have a friend who's a gunsmith. I go see him when I want to check a bore.
