WTS—Patch knife
« on: February 12, 2019, 11:57:29 PM »
I forged this one from 1084 steel. Poured pewter bolster. I’d  like $75 shipped.

Love your work!!!
Have a piece of steel, with a story behind it, that I'd like a knife made out of.

I guess that knob on the butt is for starting the ball.  What is it composed of?  Is it strong enough to be durable in that role.  I like the idea.

Someone else asked me that. The examples I used as inspiration looked to be for that purpose but I can’t say for sure...it may have just been for decoration. At any rate, I liked the vibe it gave to this particular antler so I kept it. Could it start a patched ball? Probably. If done repeatedly, I am sure it would start to degrade the integrity of the bone and eventually cause it to fail. But with the small size of this handle, it would be hard to get a grip well enough to get a ball started.

I have made a number of knives with ball starters like this. It's handy to cut a little concave area out to set on the ball, but it's stronger than u think. You cannot use it as a mallet but normal use as a ball starter should go pretty far.

You’re right it is tuff stuff! I’ve put a piece of antler on the anvil and whacked it with a hammer several good licks before I could even crack it.
