Robart Mindum Inspired Powderhorn by Wm Frankfort
« on: February 13, 2019, 04:34:06 AM »
I've been looking for a powder horn to compliment a rig I'm assembling for a .62 caliber Moravian Rifle.  I intended to check out the wares of Wm "Wild Willy" Frankfort at the 18th Century Artisan Show in Lewisburg, PA.  Willy had several horns but one in particular caught my eye and it's story caught my attention.  This particular horn was inspired by Robart Mindum; an Englishman known more for his ornamental English shoe horns of the late 16th and early 17th centuries.  With a little investigative work, I was able to find three pictures of the Mindum powder horn in question.

This powder horn was made for William Morris in 1601.  The design elements are the same as on his shoe horns, with bow ties, triangles, foliage trefoils, scroll-work and flowers, although the inscription is done inside a frame rather than around the edge.  Mindum separated the decorations into fields with the use of borders, larger triangles featuring in groups of two and smaller in groups of three.  The flowers/marigolds are within a knitwork band. 1

Here are a few pictures of Willy's rendition of Mindum's horn.  Willy embellished his horn with artistic license to include a turned antler tip and plain wood plug.

Hope you enjoyed the pictures.

Willy is quite the talent.  I don't know whether to be motivated to better work or demoralized.   ;-)  God Bless,   Marc
