Hunting Horn
« on: February 15, 2019, 09:38:25 PM »
Finished this up the other day. The mouth piece screws into the collar and the collar screws on to the horn. It is about 22" around the outside curve and 3 at the Bell, the band is held by Three Copper pins..

Now that's a good hunting horn; I like, for myself, the elegant look of unadorned quality.

Thanks Tim awesome job. This horn is even better in person.
It came from one of our Highland steers that we harvested this past fall, a memorial piece if you will, now a horn to call our other steers across the pastures.

When I was a youngster, I watched the TV series about Robin Hood, and he had a hunting horn. So I got one, and in the evening I would go out into the back yard and give it a hard blow. I could hear dogs barking all over the area. I'm tempted to make another.

Tim,
Next time your feeling educational feel free to post some progress pics up of an applied tip...screw tip...whatever the case may be. ,..
After a closer look at those cattle the color could be natural or close to it.

WOW Tim that is a beautiful dog horn. I have one of yours that looks like a composite of two horns with a couple of rings on it. I love it and I keep it handy so I can step out on the deck and wake up the neighborhood... :)

Kind Regards

Beautiful horn, Tim.
Just goes to prove elegance knows no class distinction.  That horn would have its place under the arm of a humble coon hunter afoot or in the kipskin-gloved hand of a hunt master, mounted.

Thanks, guys. This was fun to do, everything else got set aside. The horn itself was great to work.

There are a couple more over in "Tutorials" under "Accouterments" that will probably help. If not let me know and the next time I do one I will take Pix.

I am going to go with a guess here, but that looks a lot like Tim's Aqua Fortis finish to me.

God Bless,   Marc

The Pix are not very good, it was a crappy day here, pouring rain so I took them inside. The horn is a little darker than it shows, it looks lighter because of the light that was above it. The color was done with an oil based dye that was heated and applied to a heated horn, left to cool and wiped off, followed by the standard Brown shoe polish.
