Lehigh County screw-tip horns
« on: February 16, 2019, 09:03:49 PM »
I have a question about Lehigh County screw-tip horns.   For the purposes of this question I am referencing page 128 of Tom Grinslade's book Powder Horns, Documents of History.    Does the tip screw into the collar or into the horn?   In other words, does the collar just slide over the horn and is held in place by the tip?   I am afraid that I already made a threaded collar out of a solid piece of horn, and then started to think that maybe that wasn't how it was done.   I am looking for a little clarification for future PA Screw-tip horns.

Thanks,

Mark

Here is a link Tim Crosby shared on his process, think it will answer your questions, or at very very least give peace of mind. Wasn't Lehigh specific but good directions  on how he does it.

Mike,

I saw that tutorial, and it was very helpful.   However, it was for a different horn.    I was hoping to hear from someone who had had an original Lehigh (or similar PA screw-tip ) horn apart.

 Mark,
The horn has been threaded on the ones I have seen and the collar is either pinned with an Iron nail or is loose and held on by the tip. The majority of the collars were loose/well fit, a nail could have been added later in its life.

In Art DeCamps book on Penn horns. The originals have the threads in the horn spout, not in the collar. The book references a large thread diameter size 9/16 for this horn  type. Tim is right on as some collars have friction fit and others pinned. This style also uses a v-type notch where the horn fits into the butt. Mostly maple and cherry butt wood.

Thanks Tim and Ron.    That is what I suspected.    I will do that on the next horn.

Ron,  When you say a "V" notch in the base plug,  do you mean that there is a recess in the base plug for the horn?

Yes,the horn fits into the base. I use a small micro parting tool and the horn will slide right into recess.

Here is the horn I ended up making.   The collar/throat isn't right on the inside, but I don't think the horn looks too bad on the outside.

This is for Tim.

Oh yeah, that is a handsome horn Mark.  I like the beehive base a lot.  The turning on the tip is graceful.  I really appreciate the scraped finish, and the "antiquing" is just lovely.  The future owner is going to be proud of that one.  God Bless,   Marc

Your horn looks great, I like the finish you put on it. Very fine turnings on tip and butt. What type wood did you use.
I used the lead oxide treatment on a recent Lehigh.

I used cherry for the base plug and walnut for the stopper.   I used several coats of aqua fortis for the yellow color on the horn.   Then I applied walnut oil stain and powdered charcoal for aging.

Great looking horn, Mark!  I’m afraid I’m gonna have to head down that screw tip rabbit hole myself...those are just too neat!
