Medina Hawken Patchbox color
« on: February 19, 2019, 08:00:37 AM »
Just wondering what I should do to a Medina patchbox I installed on an old CVA big bore mountain rifle flinter. Yea I know its sacrilege but it looks good. I was wondering if I should brown it or leave it in the white  . The rest of the rifle is browned and the stock is pretty dark.

I believe the original is described as having.... "silver stars and plain iron patchbox"..., I think I would brown it to match the other hardware, did you put any stars on it?...Ed

I would suspect the original was case colored along with the rest of the furniture.

My thought as well.  If one were to case color it, make sure it's secured to a thick plate of steel to prevent warping.

I would suspect the original was case colored along with the rest of the furniture.

Don’t case long or be sure to draw temper or it will be mighty brittle.

its just going on an old CVA big bore so I think LMF brown will do..and only room enough for 1 star so I think ill leave the stars off...but it looks good for an old kit gun.

I put that pbox on a f/s 'Hawken" 58 flinter I built in 2010 when I got back into this. It looks plenty good, and you could change the side plates to straight ones ,there are quite a few of that design on old guns.Would take up less space on the CVA stock, too. Dave 8) 8)
