I acquired it some 45 years ago.  It is an unused antique lock.  Never received final finish.  No idea who made it, although I suspect it is English.
From a mechanical point of view, note the tall arm on the mainspring.  Even though the lock is small, it will fit against a musket sized barrel.

Lynton McKenzie had a 16 bore Fenton target rifle with a tiny lock and
said it was like a center fire rifle in ignition speed.I made 2 of these little
locks from Fenton casting copies from The Rifle Shoppe.I used only the
external parts. Lynton and another man made a copy of the rifle and they
made the lock for it,a superb example of modern lock making.

Rex Holbrook, now sadly deceased, made a superb copy of a flint Fenton target rifle over 20 years ago in the UK. It was fully reviewed in an illustrated  article in a copy of the MLAGB quarterly magazine; well worth perusing!

I remember hearing of Rex Holbrook several years ago.Did he make locks and sights?
The antique Fenton that Lynton McKenzie copied had double set triggers which are
NOT common on English rifles. That rifle was made for a competitive shooter in
California and I rehardened the frizzen on it which is how I knew about the great
quality of that lock.

Rex Holbrook made excellent copies of the Goodwin vernier tang sight. His version of the Fenton rifle featured a semi-pistol grip with a 'sawback' rear extension in the breech-tang area to which a tang sight was fixed; he also fitted a single set-trigger.

Apologies to Runastav for diverting his pistol thread!

Wow!!  If I were making that.....there would be blood from my cut up fingers all over it!!   :P

That is called "Consecrating your work" !! No good job is properly done unless some of the blood is spilled on it. Don't matter whether flint gun, car, truck,or Pipe Organ. Ive shed mine on all of it. Keep rollin,Runar, you are an inspiration to all of us. Cheers, Dave F 8) 8)

Runar and others,
I make no claims to being the lock master or master of anything other than
our Dachshund. I appreciate the good remarks from all who have made them,
especially those whose skills far surpass mine.I am NOT a gun maker and work
in a limited area of expertise in steel and use machines as much as possible
to accomplish what I want to do as well as bench work with files of various types.
I hope I can continue for a while longer, time will tell.

Runar,
You are definitely one with the file, a file prodigy, if I may say so.  I get tired just looking at the chunks of steel you are whittling into gun parts. I enjoy your posts immensely.

Really clever that the diameter of the butt cap matched that of the tube!  Really helped with the fitting!
