Gee….that is some amazing carving to my eye. I love the bloodthirsty mammal behind the cheek. :-)

How is the carving done at the wrist and tang with the "teeth" for shading. That is a beautiful effect.

Very nice color too. We need to hear all about it.

Marc, Thanks. The stain is Feibings tan & brown leather dye, sealed and finished, rubbed down with BLO and rotten stone, then a coat of black shoe polish.
I used my little 1mm V tool for all the nicks around the carving. The same tool I cut-in all my carving with.

Literally on the other side of the world, in a small living historic village, I'm talking 7th century timeframe, in western Japan. I found them quite luckily by accident in my business travel back in the 90s. You can still see the price stickers on them! 2600yen for the V tool and 2100yen for the U tool. At the time that was about $20 and $18 USD for them. I should have bought more of them!

The "beast" carved behind the cheek is supposed to be a folk artsy LION (of England).

The eagle symbolizes the German heritage, and the Indian maiden is American. So it is said.

B.H. I used Permalyn sealer & finish by Laurel Mnt. Forge. I explained some of that earlier in this post. The stain is Fiebings leather dye in Tan & Dark Brown, a couple coats of each.

Lovely, just lovely.
I've long admired the folksy style of the Angstadt family. Another quirky Lehigh style.
Also loved the little town they lived near. Kutztown, PA.
Beautiful job on the rifle.
