Applied Tip Horn/W Screw-in Base
« on: March 28, 2019, 08:57:21 PM »
Another one after a horn in Jay Hopkins' book Bone Tipped & Banded Horns This one from page 282. It was found with a Simon Lauck rifle.
It is 12" around the outside curve, 9 1/2 tip-to-tip. The Walnut base has a maple finial threaded into it that then fits into the recessed threaded Oak base, the threads are 1 X 6, it is held in place with 4 wooden pegs. The horn tip is held in place with three iron pins. The Two bands are held in place with three each. The original horn only had one band on it but there was a ghost ring where another had been so I added it.
The surface has been scraped and Saddle tan dye added followed by Brown shoe polish

Oh wow. I really like the way that base unscrews. The thin side profile of the butt gives a unique look too. I think that one will sell fast Tim. God bless, Marc
