Gentleman's Belt Pouch - Bag #11
« on: April 03, 2019, 02:19:21 AM »
Hi Folks,

Here is a small 6"x4" gentleman's belt pouch I just finished.  It is veg tanned tooling cowhide.  It has a welt for structure, and the top inside edge is bound in suede cowhide for comfort.  It will accommodate a 2" wide belt, and the loops have stand-offs at the top so a belt doesn't bind going in and out.  Pewter button. Good for holding a few balls, some patching, a worm/puller, and a bag of M&Ms for a day hunt.

I did this as a project "to get back on the horse" so to speak.  I spent a couple of months fighting a bag project with nightmarish finish issues.  James Rogers patiently helped me diagnose it - a bad cowhide.  It really burned me out, and I abandoned that project.  Feels good to have one go smooth and right again.

God Bless,   Marc

Welcome back, Marc!  That’s a very nice little bag, and would also make an excellent fire making kit...looks like plenty of room for a small tinder tin, and flint/striker, etc.  Beautiful work, as usual!

Really nice looking Marc. Is that your own design? Looks like you have taken another Big step.

Thank you all for the kind words.

Yes Tim, I drew this up using drafting tools and poster paper. This project was my “prototype” and I sized it to fit was was usable for my hand size. I think the next one will have a button tab integral to the flap.

The color is alcohol thinned Fiebing’s Pro Dye in Chocolate, built up in coats. It is then oiled, antiquing glazed and then top finished.

Thanks again to James Rogers.

God bless, Marc

Marc,
That is very nice work, I am still working back into my leather work. Honestly, I like the looks of the seperate button loop piece. I think that even my big ol mitts would find using that bag nice.

Yikes!  I realized in looking at the pictures that I had not polished the edges like normal.  I just remedied that.  God Bless,  Marc

Marcruger:

Super nice job.

As to the getting back on the horse, we all hit a wall once in a while....  Murphy comes to visit and all that.

Looking at the bag I would say from a mechanical use stand point your button tab as is may be better for use then including the button fixture in the flap.  As is it would seem to me to be easier manipulated to open the bag then working harder with the flap.

Just a thought......

Like it Marc.

Are you creasing your lines or carving them in?

Hi James,

I am using an edge creaser to do the lines parallel to the edges.  I used narrowest scribe from my set to create the other lines on this one.

You can imagine my relief when the finishing process went back to normal with this different piece of hide.

Best wishes, and God Bless,  Marc

Bruce, I agree on not having a button in the flap.  I was thinking of trying a flap that has the same shaped tab as this one....just one piece instead of two.  You may be entirely right though, this is probably the best choice with the separate tab.  Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc
