Wallet - Third Version - Updated with new photos of #4
« on: April 13, 2019, 12:00:39 AM »
*I just added photos of wallet #4 below....it's a replacement to #3.

Hi Folks,

I just finished a wallet.  The plan was to try out the new leather from Zack White leather in NC, and it turned out to be good hide.  It takes dye really well.

This wallet is intended for longrifle shows, where you need to carry your license, cards, and cash, but want to look somewhat more "period".  It was a fun project.

I tried to emulate Greg Hudson's lovely russet color that he achieves on many of his products.  This dye process for me came out fairly well considering the target.

God Bless and best wishes,   Marc

Wow!

Very nice sir!

I love the color as well. It has a wonderful warm rich color.

Kind Regards,

Doug

Nicely done.

Funny you mention Zack White, I just posted to 2 other similar forums about using the extra long straps/strips in the lightest weight offered, for bag straps. I've bought a few other things from them and been quite happy. If I didn't have a Tandy location 20 miles from home, I'd probably buy more stuff from Zack White. Tandy doesn't carry those nice long thin straps though.

I appreciate the kind words on this one.

This project turned out to be a disappointment for me, and a big learning experience as well.  I won't make the same mistake again.

The rearmost panel of the card holder inside apparently warped in the finishing process.  I didn't check to see if it was still "square".  I punched my stitching holes following the edge crease I'd made.  When I flipped the wallet over, I saw to my great dismay that the stitching line was catty-wampus.  I gritted my teeth, and went ahead and finished it up anyway.  Hard to throw away after a week and a half's work.

At least I learned a bit about getting the russet color the way I want it.

For you beginners like me, this is a lesson for you so you won't have to make the same mistake.

God Bless, and best wishes,   Marc

All is well that ends well.  My daughter dropped by, saw the wallet and loved it.  She has taken that one away and I am starting on the replacement.  :-)   God Bless,   Marc

Neat design Marc. And beautifully executed...I had to go back and look again for your “flaw”.  I think it just speaks to the “handcrafted-ness” of the item.  I’m sure the next one will be perfect!

Great stuff buddy.  Have you ever considered lining a project like this with "fine" lady's glove leather ???????

Whoa, crazy nice! Yeah the stitching flaw is disappointing I’m sure, I know the feeling. It’s like a mustache on the Mona Lisa haha. But take comfort in that this item is a wallet and is only going to look nice and new until the moment it gets filled with stuff and thrust into a pocket.
Seriously though great work all around!

That's it Eric!   :-D  The mustache for sure on the Mona Lisa.  It really bugs me.  My daughter fell in love with it though, and the flaw didn't bother her at all.  She does some leather work too.  She just carted the wallet off with a smile yesterday.  By the way, no comment on it not being mahogany or dark brown?   Hah, hah, hah, hah.  :-)

I have a duplicate underway right now, so hopefully I have learned my stitching lesson.

Bruce, I thought about lining it, as I have some really supple, very thin, beautiful goatskin. All of that said, it would add bulk to something that most folks will want thin.  I also am not sure how to glue in the lining so it wouldn't bunch up at all of the 180 degree folds.  Any ideas on that?  It is yet another item in the list of things I need to learn.

Best wishes, and God Bless,   Marc

Here is the same pattern wallet, but without the stitching issues of the last one.  As Eric said, the "mustache on the Mona Lisa" bugged me.  I had to make a new one to feel better about it.  I think this one came out a lot better.  Though it may not show in the photos, it is a bit darker than the original, which I think looks nicer.  God Bless,   Marc

Nailed it!  And, you are getting dialed in on that beautiful color, too. Nice job!

You'll notice that the artist is often his worst critic. Little things that disappoint us go unnoticed by others and only the overall product is seen. I love that your daughter took it. Many years from now she'll look at it fondly and remember.
