Coning question

I think I need to perhaps cone a barrel.  The barrel seem to  have some damaged rifling about  1/8" to 1/4" or so from the end of the muzzle.  Will a coning tool reach that far down a barrel to help clean up that rifling?

From ones I’ve seen, yes. A lot depends on what the damage looks like. How deep and so on.

Just curious but would a deep crown job fix it instead of a coning?

What is a deep crown job? I thought it was just smoothing the end of the barrel perpendicular to the bore.

By deep crown I mean from the end of the barrel down 1/8-1/4 and remove enough to get rid of the damage but not so far down as some cone jobs go where you rid rid of the rifling lands for an inch and a half .

I will try to post a picture of the rifling in a day or two.

I have no experience with coning or making a deep crown.

This is more like a deeper normal crown - similar to the long tapered crown.
This one shot well. I used a tapered stone meant for a drill, wrapped in 320 wet/dry paper
and just rotated it back and forth with my hand, turning the barrel now and then. The result is
perfectly centered & a bit deeper than normal - about 1/4" to full grove depth.
