Pewter Pipe Hawk-Update-5 May '19***PICTURE HEAVY***

Here is were I left off:

http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=51504.msg512072#msg512072

This is how I decided to use the head, as the handle for a pipe hawk style walking stick. The staff is made up from wormy Maple, (See the Pix, give it some character I think) to make it stronger I glued Two pieces together, I am surprised at the flex it has. The head was fit just as if it were on a shorter haft. The bands are poured Pewter, the diamonds were made by soldering strips of Brass together, cutting them out and filing to shape. The tip is Bone, not antler but Beef bone, that I turned to shape. It is held in by a Brass bolt that is about Four inches long. There was a slot in the head so I soldered a piece in it and filed it off. The Brass cap is held in place by Four Iron pins and the head is also pinned though.
The finish is a Lemon Yellow water based dye, followed by Black stain, it starts out Really BLACK, sanded back and repeated until I got what I was looking for, then Danish oil.  Used to use it on stocks, you can go through a lot of paper and Steelwool.
The head has some flaws but it helps the used look as do the worn holes. May end up putting a patina on the head somewhere along the line, we'll see. Don't think I will do another, may do something with that second head. It was a learning experience

Heck of a lot of hand work in there Tim.  Nice pewter and inlay work for sure.  I do think I'd cold blue and rub back the head to more match the shaft.  Best wishes, and God Bless,  Marc

Neat looking axe Tim. How long is the handle or is it a small head?

Great looking piece. I like the wormy look, have one of Ken's rifles with it in the fore stock.

Bet that was a fun handle to drill. Twenty seven inches is the longest hole I've done and it took two tries.

Repurposed as always. Here is what it was cut from. I like using old stuff so you can get an idea of how it's going to look down the road.
