Another Southern Banded Horn

Here is another Southern Banded horn I just finished.   This is a large one similar to some early Virginia horns in Jay Hopkins book.  I think it would go well with my early VA bag.   This is technically a right hand horn, but I think it would fit better on the left.   It is about 17" around the outside curve from button to stopper.   It is about 13 1/4" straight tip to tip.  The walnut base plug is about 2 5/8" in diameter and drilled out about 3/4 of its length.    The tip is made up of horn and antler.   I was using up some scraps.   I still had a bit of trouble getting the base band tight up against the base plug.  I thought I had it tight when I did it, but the photos show otherwise.    I am starting to think I might need new glasses.

I think you are seeing things.  The band looks tight up against the base to me.  Certainly nothing I would complain about.

Overall, I like the whole project.  Nice architecture.  Well turned tip, and it is on straight.  The bands look nice with fine detailed turnings.  Sharp looking base plug.  Warm looking finish and antiquing (AF?).  Oh yes, the cool tulip bud stopper. 

What's not to like? 

I think we are our own worse critic.

That one should sell quickly.  Nice work.

I appreciate the positive feedback.   You need to keep in mind that I can only post low resolution photos here.   They hide a lot.   The ones I take and am looking at at home show every defect including random tool marks I could never see with with my naked eyes.

I really like that horn especially the thin profile that it has.  I’ve already flubbed up several horns trying to make a banded one.  Yours look top notch to me.

 Looks Good, nice work Mark. Tool marks are the mark of a hand made item. The band looks like it fits right to me.

Those base bands are hard to get just right. Nice looking horn overall, just keep making them.
