Browning a muzzle cap

When making an iron mounted rifle... how many here brown the muzzle cap?
How do you fasten the cap so it can be removed for browning? Do you use a screw? Or rivet it in place after finishing?

Longrifle muzzle caps are usually cross-pinned, are they not? Both of mine are, even the one that has brass furniture.

Don't ordinarily use steel mounts but have done a couple. The muzzle cap is riveted through the web w/ a copper rivet and I just browned the cap on the rifle. Taped the stock but don't think that was necessary . The brown used was LMF's and ammonia was used to neutralize. The stock finish was not affected.....Fred

Yup. Just brown it right on the stock. It is imperative that there be no finish, dirt or oil on it prior, but that is easily accomplished.

Just finished fitting up a iron muzzle cap, instead of riveting or nailing I simply made a press fit and used only thumb pressure and gently squeezed the cap in place. With a swamp barrel it stays in place by itself and can be removed real simply by hand pressure. I reckon that will do and it can be removed without busting the wood at the end of the stock.

I have done several and I always brown the installed and riveted nosecap on the rifle. I use masking tape to cover the wood prior to browning. It is easier to do than you might think.

I have used a 4x40 countersink screw to attach a nose cap.

OK... mystery solved... brown it on the gun... never thought it was done that way... go figure.

I always do it on the stock. It is a little slower to do it that way, but it is the only way I could figure to handle it and still attach the nose piece the way it was on the originals with rivets.

Rat,
I always brown the noses cap on the rifle. Make sure it is good and clean, use a hair dryer to make the metal very warm, then apply the browning solution. It will brown much quicker if it is heated first.
