Where any of the southern mtn rifles made with straight tapered barrels?

I have an original flint VA rifle, probably circa 1800-1825, with a tapered barrel. I am not sure it would fit "mountain rifle" description since it has patchbox/sideplate/buttplate etc but it is all iron mounted. I had not seen a tapered barrel on this an rifle this early and wondered if it was common. Wallace Gusler told me that they were not un-common in the western area of VA. I didn't ask about other areas.

I did a restoration on a southern Iron mounted half stock rifle dated 1858 that had a straight tapered barrel. It was about 36 cal. a very slender and gracefull rifle.

Dennis,

Any chance we could talk you into posting photos of your VA rifle?  Looking at the photos on here is simply a wonderful part of life!

Thanks so much for all that you do for the forum.

Thanks, Dennis for posting that.  That is a neat rifle.  I love the honesty of the Southern iron mounted rifles.
