Let's see your squirrel rifle!!!
« on: March 28, 2010, 05:34:22 AM »
I have an itch to build/buy a 32 caliber squirrel shooter.   Probably in flintlock.   Whet my appetite with some photos and/or comments, tall tales and such about your small bore bushytail bushwackers! ;D

Mine is still in the white and being finished.  I hunted with it in the rough last year.  I have a 3/4 X36 inch barreled Rayl barrel in 25 and use #3 buckshot I get from TOW that claims theirs is pure lead.  It is more than enough for any squirrel at any range I can hit with iron sights.  It hits about like a 22lr hp or so.  I pretty much tore apart a pine squirrel that I shot lengthwise with it.  Any of the squirrel rifles require head shooting as they are pretty nasty.  My 32's would decapitate a rabbit and would hit about like a 22mag hp.  The 40 actually will shoot accurately loaded down with about 30 grains of powder and isn't quite so nasty on a body hit.  I shot several with a 45 when I staarted out.  The 25 is a great little small game getter for me and is light and handy to carry.  It is built on a poor boy pattern with no buttplate and a poured nosecap.  Been finishing up the little gun this winter and am very close to adding finish.

Daryl...When I saw your .32 Tennessee, I thought it was my .29 because they are identical twins. Lots of squirrels have been too close to that .29 to remember it.

That's interesting, ironsights1 - I'm still trying to find out who made it.  Jim Chamber's can't remember, either. I bought it from Jim at Dixon's last July.  It was a cap-lock, then and Jim converted it to flint for me.
I sure like shooting it, when the wind isn't blowing too hard.

This is my "squirrel plus" rifle, .40 x 38" swamped barrel Late Lancaster.  It likes 40 grains 3f but does equally well with 30.  got a bit more work to do as 40 grains hits dead center but 30 hits below line of sight.  A  bit of filing should take care of that.

Daryl...My .29 Tennessee flintlock was made by Bob Means of New Harmony, IN, back in the early 1980s. I understand that he passed away this last year. I furnished the walnut blank and he did the rest. It was my first custom rifle after having a T/C Hawken in .50 caliber for 10 years previously which I used on squirrels, again taking head shots only. I had 16 in a row until I tried to "bark" one. That squirrel is probably still running!!

TKS- not familiar with Bob - perhaps I should mention it to Jim - perhaps it will jog his memory.

LB has a beautiful Tenn. rifle, but perhaps lacks a camera or any pictures of it?

I've built several squirrel rifles over the years, but don't have pictures of many of them...BDC (before digital camera).  Here's some pics I shot of a .36 cal Maryland styled rifle that I made for the woman who did my books for all those years without charging me a nickel.  It has a 40" tapered Bauska barrel, is serial # 52, and was finished on 4 Nov 83.

At the risk of boring you with a rifle I've posted before, and shared with many of you at Dixon's, here's a few pics of my .40 cal Jacob Kuntz inspired rifle.
It has a Rice 44" B weight barrel, wood from Tiger Hunt, heavily carded Neider brown.

I don't know about anybody else, but it would take a long time for me to get tired of looking at that rifle, Taylor! There's a definite drool factor involved.

Sweet rifle Robby - if it handles anything like Taylor's Jacob Kuntz, it's a real winner.
