Title: where is a good place to by a moderen made flintlock? THE SEARCH IS OVER!
Post by: BILL OKLAHOMA CITY on September 15, 2010, 04:58:40 AM
I am trying to build a chambers york kit in 45 cal, but failing at all levels.
the barrel is a rice "a" barrel and the stock is a custom York.

Anyway, I am too @!*% old to get on a waiting list. I may not live that long with my health problems.

So, where can I get a long rifle "off the rack" that has a rice barrel.

I would settle for one "in the white" if I have to.
thank you
Bill
EDITED to add: I should have bought Mr Martins rifle at Track when it was posted here, but at that time I still thought I could salveage my kit. now I am not so sure.

The search is over! This one will be delivered Friday! ;D ;D ;D
Thanks, Dennis

There are lots of gunsmiths on this fourm that might have a completed rifle for sale as well as other rifles at TOTW, Tip Curtis, etc.  What you want to spend will make alot of difference too.       Gary

I looked at the other rifles at Track and nothing excited me like the rile that Mr. Martin built.

Try putting a post in the for sale section of this Forum stating what you want and your budget.  You might find something that you like from one of the people who answers.  It's free, what have you got to lose?

OOOPS! I didn't scroll down to that section before I posted. :-[

It looks like my earlier post did not show up on the subject.  Call Tip Curtis at 615-645-4445.  He runs the Frontier Shop, and always has several rifles in the white and several finished pieces for sale.  He has a very large supply of parts for the builder as well.  I am not sure if he has returned from Friendship yet or not, but he is well worth the effort to call.

Tip is still there. Will likely be home middle of next week with several to pick from. Talked to him wed and he and other vendors were having rather spotty sales. Shoot turn out down some.

BUT, the carving on Bill's rifle was done by VAriflegun. I could never come close to doing the fine carving he did on that rifle.

Nice rifle guys!  Congratulations Bill.

You won't regret having a good contemporary piece to guide you while you are building your first one - serves as a good road map.

And you get to start shooting it next week!

Guy

You need to be more specific.  Do you want amateur or professional work?  The difference to a layman might be indiscernible, but to those of us who build, pro work is the lightning and amateur work is the lightning bug.  You won't see the dished relief behind a scroll on a pro's work.  You won't see gaps.  You won't see questionable architecture, funky wrists, fat fore ends, and engraving that looks as if done by a Mongolian herdsman (no offense).  Not that all amateur work is bad; mine's quite good.  But I can tell the difference between the common and the crisp.

Guys, we are in the same dilemma as a school teacher. We can "clap for $#@*," stroke egos, and make people feel good, or we can tell it as it really is, point out the flaws, offend people perhaps in the process, and end up with better rifles.   I learned by being criticized, not stroked, and I am still not where I wish to be.

If I wanted a gun right now, I'd build one myself, yes, but, if momma said "Go ye forth and splurge," I think I'd  commission Wheland, Martin or Shipman, depending on what I chose to buy.  And the wondrous thing is I can be in any of those shops in about an hour and a half.  There are more expensive builders, but nix besser!  Wayne

Wayne, Much of your writing, at least to me is, cryptic, mystic, spiritual, allegorical, metaphorical, metaphysical, and subject to a variety of understanding, based on perspective, and moon phase. So when you express something, that on first blush, seems to be very forthright, I'm not sure how to interpret it, as to content. What are you getting at?

So.... Wayne  look at the picture of the gun built by Dennis and carved by VARiflegun......Can you please point out where you see all these horrible flaws??  No slam on the other builders you mentioned..they all do beautiful work, but hey what is wrong with this rifle??...are you looking at another post??  ;D ;D   What is that stuff you drink up there??  ;)

No, no, I apologize...no reference to present work displayed was either expressed or implied.  That one looks most decent.  Point is, the man originally asked for info on buying a gun.  My point is straightforward and blatant, open to anyone.  Perhaps moon phases and egos have something to do with the interpretation of my simple words as well as they do with their expression.

Rephrased, there is good work out there for sale and bad work out there for sale.  Price is not always a determiner of quality.  If you want a decent gun without waiting, I just sold 3 of the 4 I had in inventory.  There's one left; come see and judge for yourself.  Compare it to the others readily available; you may very well come back.  Hope it is still here for you.  Wait time for another is 1 year.

Hope this clarifies.  Nothing at all cryptic, obfuscatory, supercilious, banal or lambasting about my original erudition from my limited perspective.  I guess perhaps you guys got off the original subject with your own advertisements and show-and-tells and I got back on it.  Look again.

Bill,

regardless of all of that.......  I think you bought a Beaut of a rifle, very nicely built & carved. I hope you get many years of good use from it.
