I guess first off i should start with an introduction. My name is Wayne, i have been lurking this forum off and on for a while now. I am looking to build my first longrifle soon and forum member suggested this book to me but new sources say it's out of print. Does anyone know were i can find a new or used copy of this book? I appreciate any help.
Thanks, Wayne

"The Gunsmith of Greenville County" is not the only book that members of this forum recommend. I personally like "Recreating the American Longrifle \" by Shumway, Buchele and Alexander. A lot of others on this forum like Chuck Dixon's book. I would not stress out over not being able to acquire your first choice.

I just ran a search for it. There are used copies available from $377 to $650.
$#*!, I'll sell you mine for $200 and ship it for free. ;)
Good luck......I'm sure there are probably guys here that will just give you one for free.
The other books are just as good and will cost you around $50 new.

I think Stonewall Creek still has it in stock. As Dave said. it is not the only book out there, especially for beginners, and as Dave Kanger(TOF) said I'll also sell my copy for $200 bucks. ;D Call Dixon's and get Chuck's book, which Alexander also helped write.

HMMMM....I think I've got a couple of NOS copies of Chuck's earlier edition, the one that Alexander didn't help write.

Heck, dave maybe I screwed up tonite, foggy brain, and Three Rare Eagles. :o ;D

I know that Alexander helped write one of the editions of Buchele's Book. Did he help with Dixon's book too?

Bruce,
You're right........I got it backwards. I just found those books and they are by Buchelle, Shumway and Alexander.
If I turn into a blubbering, drooling Alzheimer's victim, will somebody please put me out of my misery.

Gladly.

Hey everyone, thanks for the replies.....I got to thumb through The Gunsmith of Greenville Co and I really liked what i saw. I haven't had the priviledge of looking at Recreating the American Longrifle. But if I don't find the one I want then I will get the other. I was just hoping someone on here might possibly have a used copy that they don't use anymore without asking a rediculous price......

Buy Dixons book, you can actually use it in the shop without fear getting it dirty.
Much cheaper too.
If you are a new builder I would recommend buying a GOOD kit like from Chambers to break the ice.
If you can get to someplace that offers classes or if there is a Guild or other group of ML makers in your area this will be a great help.

Hey Folks, No, I did not help Chuck Dixon on his book. I did work with George Shumway in 1981 - 1982, and we co- wrote the new edition of Recreating the American Longrifle. I even helped George revise that one, still in print today. George taught me how to write clearly. That first co-write got me my job writing "how-to" articles for Muzzleloader Magazine, which eventually resulted in my book: THE GUNSMITH OF GRENVILLE COUNTY (Ontario, Canada), sadly out of print. Glad to see that so many want a copy: I thought anyone who wanted a copy, already had one - hence the drop-off in sales. I am starting a complete revision of the book - one last kick at the can! Of course, the new edition will render the out-of-print one completely obsolete. To go with it, my son, Andrew. will be producing a totally new DVD to replace the 5-videotape set of me building not one, but two rifles. Cheers, Peter A. Alexander

The nuber to skurlock publishing is: 1-800-228-6389. Tell them that you want to be placed on the list for The Gunsmith of Greenville Co....

I doubt I'll be using my copy in the future. E-mail me if you'd be interested in buying it--and at a realistic price.

I hope I'm not straying too far off topic to give Peter some accolades on his book "The Gunsmith of Grenville County." There are things in that book that are explained a good bit clearer than some other sources and for me personally, the lights finally went on for a couple things I really didn't understand completely before. Wish he had written that 30 or 40 years ago! Grin.

First one to pick up is Chuck's book. It walks you thru the construction step by step where Pete' book kinda jumps around but is in fact much more detailed. You can get Check's book direct from him for $25. (see his ad in M Blasts) If you tell him I suggested that he may charge you double ;D ;D ::)

I found that book on Ebay a couple of weeks ago. There are still several copies at the $250 + range. I happened to find a guy selling on with a "Best Offer" option. I offered $75 and he took it. I lucked out a bit because I didn't think I would get it less than $200.
