Title: Kentucky ALR Meeting at Boonesborough, Jan. 29
Post by: Ky-Flinter on January 07, 2011, 07:42:44 AM
Ft. Boonesborough has offered us the use of the Blockhouse again this year for an ALR get-together.  We will be meeting on Saturday, January 29, from 10am to 4pm, with a break for lunch, maybe at Hall's again?

All ALR members and anyone that's interested in the study, building, shooting, etc. of long rifles, horns, bags, knives, etc. is welcome.  Bring works in progress, recently completed pieces, items for sale or trade.

We had about 12 attendees last year and we had a great time.  So please come and join us.  Jeff's tutorial last year on the Lindsey sharpening system was very popular.  Maybe I can impose on him again.;)  I'd like to line up some other tutorials, if anyone has any tips or how-to's they would be willing to pass along, please let me know.

I'd like to get a rough head count, so I can let Bill at the Fort know how many tables and chairs we need, so please let me know if you think you will be attending.

I'll be looking forward to seeing y'all again.

-Ron

Ron,  if work or weather doesn't interfere, I'd like to drive down from Pike County.

Hi Ron

Sorry but I can't make it on that date - Granddaughter's 3rd birthday party.

All the best

Not an  ALR member but sounds really interesting. Went to CLRA show last 2 years (WOW!) at Lexington and joined. I recently completed 2 rifles and have numbers 3, 4, and 5(pistol) started and plans for at least two more. Non members welcome? About a 2 and a half hour drive for me.

Hi David,

Welcome to ALR.  You're registered and posting here, so you are an ALR member and you're certainly welcome to join us at Boonesborough.

WoooHooo!  Going to Boonesborough tomorrow.  The weather report doesn't mention snow (for a change, whew!) and a high of 42...  should be a great day at the Fort.  Hope to see you here.

I don't know about the rest of the crew, but I had a great time.  Turnout was down a little, unfortunately several members needed to attend the funeral of a friend, others were working the NMLRA booth at a show in Louisville.... and I suspect others found better things to do on the first really nice weather day we've had in weeks.  No worries.... as I said, I had fun!

The Fort Boonesborough management really made us welcome.  They gave us the use of one of the log blockhouses for our meeting.  They had a fire going in the fireplace, coffee, cookies and other goodies.  You should visit the fort if you get the chance.  They are a doing great job.

And they had a special treat for us.  One of our hosts brought his Jack Haugh Bicentennial rifle, horn and related documents for us to see.  What a great rifle.

David P. wins the longest distance traveled prize.  Thanks for making the trek.  David brought 3 pieces, a great boys rifle, a completed LR and a cherry stocked work in progress.  David is an apprentice like me but is doing great work.  You should see the full scale drawing of his next project!

G.T. brought 2 LR's and showed us his trade secret technique for using AquaFortis without heat.  I sure like his work!

BGF showed the iron furniture he's making for his current project.  Great stuff and stout!

Jeff T. brought his current LR project and also gave us all some how-to pointers on the Lindsey sharpening system and how he makes those great Portmanteaus.

As usual, lunch at Hall's was great.  Oh..... hey Rick, thanks for sending the stickers.  They were a big hit!

The Fort manager invited us back again for next year and I hope you can join us.

Anyone have any photos they can post for those of us who live in the frozen north?

Sorry Tom.  Unfortunately I forgot my camera and I don't recall seeing anyone else using one.

I had a great time! I'm new to this forum, and met these fellows for the first time, but by the time I
left I felt like I had been among old friends. I got to see some really great work and recieved a lot of new insight and inspiration. Was well worth the drive! Thanks Ron for setting up this opportunity. Looking forward to the next one.
