Title: Bison powderhorn, part 4, finished carving.

I had originally plan to file a large octagon spout and inlet silver filigree panels on four of the sides. I was unsure if the walls were thick enough for this, so I did a short octagon tip followed by a candy cane/spiral pattern. It worked out nicely.

The yellow tape shows where I'm going to make silver filigree bands. The horn has a two piece butt plug. The inner plug is glued in with epoxy and made  3/4" ash plank. The core isn't cut out jet. The outer plug will be of 3/8" black walnut and rimmed with a silver filigree band.

Very nice.  I look forward to seeing the silver work. That will be one fine horn!

Thank you for your kind comments. I'll post pictures of the silver work as it progresses.

Elnathan, carving a spiral is easier than it looks. The trick is to lay out the pattern correctly.

1. Tape a ring of masking tape around the spout where you want the top and bottom of the spiral.

2. Split the rings and gently pry the tape lose. Divide the length of the tapes with the number of flutes you want.

3. Tape the top and bottom of the spout again and transfer the measurements to the new tape rings.

4. Stretch masking tape between the marks on the two rings. Make sure the tape follows a straight line, not a arc.

5. Follow the edge of the tape when cutting the flutes. First I used a knife edge needle file to cut a narrow 2mm (0.08") deep trench. I widened the trench with a triangle needle, followed with a round file. Then I rounded the flutes with sand paper.

Very nice indeed!  It will be spectacular when you get the silver on it.  Great idea!
