Title: My First and Second Horn
Post by: J1776 on April 05, 2011, 10:00:07 PM
Well,... just thought I'd jump in the mix and post a few photos of the first & second horn I had carved up.

First horn...
Length - 13"
Maple end plug....no stopper yet.

Second horn (I'm playing around with the scrimshaw lettering, darkening it later instead of right away, that's why its not finished, just to see the effects of changing up the sequence)
Length - 14.5"
Maple end plug.
Keeping it rough looking a little,... a bit primitive.  Nothing special really.

(Not crazy about the lighting,... these were all done on the fly)

 :)  Hahaha,... thanks!
I put a few hours into these, but on a lengthy basis with a newborn son, work etc.
I'm looking to knuckle down though and hone by scrimshaw though,...better tools will certainly help,... this I'm realized as the cheap wood tools really suck! :o

Again,.. thanks.
I'll be making one for my son next,... something nice and person, father to son.

Thank you all.
I didn't want to go nuts with either horn (in the way of detail),... wanted something between detailed and comfortably usable for the real world of field use.
I think I'll find myself going overboard though for my son's horn,...haha ::)

Those are great first and second horns. you've got skilz all right!  I'll make a couple suggestions, to make the horns much thinner and make the plugs flush with the fat end or rounded instead of recessed.  A couple goals I keep in mind when making a horn are to make it as light as possible while keeping its strength and to maximize the powder capacity.

Take a look at your first and third photos. The tracks of your Dremel (I think that's what I'm seeing) are pretty visible. Okay to hog out that way, but spending some time cleaning up and finishing by hand would be a good idea.

WONDERFUL engraving. I'm too chicken to even try that stuff. Someday I'll get brave and give it a shot, but your quality will be my goal--for a good long while.

Funny thing is it started out with NO dremel use, and I'd say about 95% was all hand work... then I hit it with the dremel a little, and what you see is some dremel marks and some other filing marks.  I thought about going over it later ad take out those areas and re-stain it.  I actually felt strange using a dremel, but yes, it makes things go easier to "some" extent.
