Title: 54 cal swampped
Post by: jeager58 on May 16, 2011, 12:14:41 AM
I just bought a barrel from a  member through the mail. He said it was a Getz 54 cal barrel.   It is 54 cal  and swamped  but has no markings on it.  is there any way to tell .  maybe Don can comment or someone who has  some insight...Phil

I have some Getz barrels and they are marked on the bottom flat in small print just ahead of the breach plug. Take another peek and see if they are there.

I know that I have almost removed the makers stamp when drawfiling out the flats. There is only a hint of the stamp when I am done most of the time. Has it been draw filed?

How many grooves are in the barrel? I think Getz barrels in 54 cal. have 7 grooves.

It should have "Getz" on the top line and "Beavertown, Pa." on the bottom line, stamped, small letters.    It should also
have a 54 stamped with a 1/66 below it.  It should also have a serial number made with a vibrating tool.   If it doesn't
have this info, check the bore real well, look for imperfections in the rifling...........it could have been sold as a second in
which case it would have no stampings on the bottom......Don
