Hello,
As you can see, was rather busy during my down time during deployment, so I wanted to do my own campaign horn from my tour in Afghanistan. The eagle is a war eagle--looking for more of a modern take on scrimshawed eagles, kind of like a copper plate. I was deployed with the 82nd Airborne with the designation near the eagle. The reverse side has a stylized map of Afghanistan & Pakistan. On the base is a tribute to 9-11 and the Psalm verse--HE IS MY ROCK, MY SHIELD, MY SWORD. It is bordered by laurel leaves. The plug is hollowed out and made from a piece of wood that I brought back and I inset a coin from Operation ENDURING FREEDOM from US Central Command. I used a brass bar stock as a staple, securing the coin to the plug.

Wow. Tight design, but loose enough. Great engraving without being crazy-fussy. This is the stuff that makes me come back to this forum.

Carl,
In the late 1970's, while I was in the Navy and endlessly at sea aboard one combatant or another, I did a lot of scrimshaw work. To me, it was exactly the type of thing a sailor should be doing in his minimal spare time and with no work shop or tools other than a knife and a sail maker's needle. For a soldier, far from hearth and home, making a powder horn and decorating it with the designs of his campaigns and sayings that touch his heart is the epitome of the art...and in its proper setting. Bravo Zulu.
I wish you "fair winds and a following sea".
God Speed, Carl.

A new face on an old tradition, outstanding!
-
All,
Thank you so much for the kind words. If I may, for a brief moment, ask that you keep in your hearts and prayers the 253 fallen soldiers that paid the ultimate sacrifice during my deployment. I also humbly ask that you pray that their families find peace. President Lincoln's last line in a condolence letter to Mrs Bixby (a widow who was thought to have lost her 5 sons in the Civil War) resonates within me as I think of my fallen comrades. They too have "laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

I love it.
My uncle was in the 17th Airborne in WWII.
His outfit was pretty much wiped out on D-Day, so they were
thrown in with the 101st, and later into the 82nd which is
where he was when he was sent home at the end of the war.
Thank you for your service to our country.
Good Shootin!!

Dear Madam,
I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant-General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.
I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.
I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom.
Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,
Abraham Lincoln
