Title: I also goofed
Post by: greybeard on October 05, 2011, 07:04:50 PM
Seems to be a trend as of late. . I recently made a P box for a friend . took pics to email him hit send and the light bulb went on,    My friend is a lefty. As you can see by the pic I made it for the wrong side. I found the flip thingey and now hae a left side pic printed so back to square one.
( this pic is an original flipped.bob)

How come there are so many lefties all of a sudden? I'd be wary of a 'lefty' making you a low bid on a rightie box.  ;D

In Kindig's book "Thoughts...Ky Rifle", he had a John and Henry Noll rifle (# 244) that was a left hand lock with the patch box on the right hand side of the gun. I think it was still made to shoot right handed though, cause the cheek piece in on the left side also.  But if he didn't really want the cheek piece...

Thanks for the responses folks.  My solution is to make a new longer lid and the two sideplates.
The finial is O K as I have seen the coxcomb finial applied both ways. To just make new sideplates and recut the curve for the buttplate would leave the box kinda stumpy lookin so  thats my solution.

You should just save that one and make a new one. You're planning on re-doing 75% of the thing anyway. Might as well go all the way and have another pb for future use or sale.
Just my 2 cents.

Any chance you can move the hinge tabs & hinge to the other side w/o breaking them off. Anneal, straighten and re-bend.
Making the hinge to the other side gives you a left hand PB.

What you'd be looking at in the pic posted is the back of the left hand PB.
No new parts to make.
Your existing door engraving would be visible when the door was opened in a LHand installation. Either burnish it out or add something to it to make it acceptable for the interior. Name, date, etc.

You'll still have to re-engrave  the outside of the box as the now plain bottom will become the outside. But you'll have to on a new one as well.
Go gently on the new screw countersinks too. Use a wider angle if possible to avoid a cut through and a large screw hole.

Or just make another one! and sell this one.

Kutter;   The box and lid can be installed on the left side without doing anything to them at all;
The coxcomb finial can be used either way up,. Only the side plates really need to be remade if I go that route.. but I will probably go foe a whole new box. Thanks for your ideas.  Bob

Well it's been a while but I opted to make a new left handed patch box. I'm happy and my friend is happy.  Here is the end result.     Bob

Well done Greybeard!  Both patchboxes are mighty fine, you saved the project with your ReDo for sure.
