Title: Southern revenge
Post by: Ezra on July 04, 2008, 09:05:28 PM
Still working on inletting my lollipop tang on my fine Gillespie rifle kit from Dennis Glazener.  I have concluded that Lollipop tangs and their ilk are the Devils own.  :o ;)

Taking it nice and slow as I have already had to do one not so minor repair.

Ezra,
If you really screw up, pour a pewter inlay around it.
Those who don't know any better think it's neat.
Those who do, already know that you screwed up.

I was talking to a guy one day and admitted to him that, "the guns never turn out like you want, the end result is a series of corrections to all the mistakes that were made."

Actually, only a maker will be able to find many of the mistakes. They're the only ones who know where to look, and what it should look like!

Andy is correct.  As makers it takes a while to learn to keep our mouth shut about our change in designs when we build a rifle.  Some "mistakes" are just that,  a change in design.   I tell folks that if I ever build a Ml without any mistakes in it I will quit building.  I don't think I will be quitting anytime in the future.  That part of the fun of building actually.  The ability to compensate.  The really top builders on this forum give pretty sound advice on how to fix mistakes.  Three guesses on how they know!

building a rifle can be challenging, but fixing mistakes is even more!!with each rifle we build there are fewer mistakes atleast serious ones.

And sometimes we make bigger mistakes.  Like this poorly drilled lockbolt.

I made more positive progress yesterday.  I still have not ruined it, but I have more time yet so... :o

Sounds like you have faith in yourself.  I have a couple of screw ups in my current project which will have to be corrected.  Know I will make them just don't know at what.

As a good friend of mine says, his gun building is just a series of damage control!  ;)
