Title: Tradegun Sight
Post by: Pete G. on October 10, 2012, 12:57:40 AM
Aside from a couple of murky photos in the Hamilton book, has anyone seen a good picture of what the rear sight on a tradegun would look like? Was there a somewhat standardized sight or were they pretty much an individual thing ?

The one I use on my Carolina guns are cast from an original.

I am not sure who's piece this is but I loved the sight on this fowler. Maybe one of Mike's. I tucked it way in my collection of sight  photos when I came across it.

This is the same type of sight shown on some of the "Type G" barrels in Hamilton's book.   Hope the pics help.

The late David Dodds? I'm guessing, but the touchmark looks familiar.

Who sells these sights? I made a similiar one for my 16 bore fowler and really liked it for wing shooting. Would prefer to buy one than the make one for the fowler I will be building as soon as I get the barrel.

If memory serves, that picture is from an auction site, and it's a very early Dutch rifle.

Thanks, guys. Looks easy enough to make from bar stock. The extra angles help a lot.

Would these things be proper on a fowling piece, or did they only show up on trade guns?

The Jack Brooks trade gun sight is available here:
$25 each.  Shipping is $5.  Just send a check to Jack Brooks, 800 West Oxford Ave., Englewood, Colorado 80110.

They are cast from an original type D trade gun.
