Title: Silver wire and inlay material
Post by: PPatch on January 28, 2013, 08:56:50 PM
Gentlemen;

Looking to purchase some silver inlay materials - I have settled on 10ga (1mm or .3937in.) .999 pure silver for fabracating the inlays and am thinking .925 sterling for making the tiny brads.

What diameter for the brad making wire? I am thinking 1.6mm/.06299 dia.

Your suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

dave

I think that Stonewall has sterling brads ready made.  I know I picked up a couple of bags at Dixons and I'm pretty sure it was from them.

I would use sterling rather than fine silver for the inlays, I use 0.040".  I think 1/16" is too big for brads.

You can try Hoover & Strong for mill goods but they can be kinda funny about who they will sell to.   You have to call them to find out if they will sell to you.   They don't want to sell to anyone who will compete with their primary customers, jewelers.    Rio Grande is another option.   They apparently sell to any one.   Generally,  sterling is all that is available in silver and I would think that would be good enough.    If anybody could provide you with fine silver, that would be Hoover & Strong as they are refiners.

Thanks for the tip Louie - I will check that St Lo company out. Yes .040 wire, sounds better than .062... getting into NAILS with that.  :)

Thanks everyone - I believe I'm squared away now.

I will phone them and see if they have it - thank you.
