Title: New toys and parts id
Post by: cmac on February 22, 2013, 06:41:00 PM
I finally got a mill and lathe. I took the advice from others on here and went with two separate units not a combo machine.
Also...Can anyone id this lock and barrel (makers)? No mark on barrel, only mark on lock is an 8 behind the main spring

That's about all I have too. A 20" center lathe and a Mill/Drill. My M/Drill is a little bigger probably but doesn't do anything different.
You'll have fun with those two!

Everything looks so,,,clean & uncluttered though.. ;D

What is the maximum RPM on that little V mill?

Neat toys you gave yourself!

With the mill, use sharp tools and take relatively light cuts and it'll do you a fine job!

Enjoy,
John

Way to go cmac. I guess you plan to step it up a notch! Have fun with the new machinery and keep us in the loop with the new projects.

Yup I'm pretty happy with em so far. I have to get some more tooling but I have done a few tapered ramrod tips and cleaning jags, and also milled the top flat on a rail road anvil. I will post some pictures when I get the tooling to do the smalls better.

Rob the mill has...
Number of speeds: 12
Range of speeds: 110-2580 RPM
Motor size: 1 HP

It was a bit hard to get em up into the upstairs of my garage. each crate weighed about 430 lbs. Had a bobcat lift them up but then I had to roll em on pipes into the building and uncrate. Two people can lift the lathe up onto the bench. The mill I put on the stand platform without the legs(on blocks) then jacked it up until I could put the legs back on.       I am going to beef up the floor joists a bit!

That is the same little lathe I've got. The spindle bore is 1".

No wonder my back is still shot.
When I got mine,,more than a few years ago, I carried them into the house, down the stairs into the basement and put them up onto their benches myself.
I did strip them down as far as I dared,,took the head off of the mill and the tailstock off the lathe, ect.

The lathe took me more than a few tries to get it up onto it's bench, which I made a little higher than normal so I wouldn't have to stoop over to use it.

I did spring for a larger mill vise and am glad I did. I don't know what you call it but it rotates and then can be locked into position once it's fixed jaw is indicated parallel. A lot heavier than the drill press type, longer clamping jaws and makes working on bbls and things like that much easier.

A 1" headstock hole is nice,,mine is a smaller dia and wished more than once for the larger spec. But it's probably steared me away from some projects I shouldn't have gotten in to anyway!

You learn to use what you have. I recently made up an 8ga shotshell rim recess cutter and then used it to cut the rim recesses on a newly made and fitted extractor for a WC Scott set of bbls.
All done on the little lathe and mill/drill. Cutting done on the mill with the blank extractor in place in bbls.
My setups are both 'Jet' tagged and haven't have any problems with them in over 20yrs of use.

Have Fun!
