What PERIOD is the rifle.
A 40 caliber from 1830 is different than a 40 caliber from 1775.
If its an early rifle you need and early buttplate. If its an 1830-40 rifle you will need something frkm that period.

If you look through the blogs and the archives here you will probably fined a rifle in the Lancaster school which you would like to copy, more than likely the builder or owner can refer you to a source they used for the castings.
BTW, there is a set of Haines castings available on the classifieds right now.

Dan has it right. You need to know what you want before you go any further. Do you already have a barrel? If its a .40 cal that is only 3/4" across the flats you want a late style gun. TOW #BP-PW-12-B 1 1/4" WIDE, 4 1/8" TALL, 1 7/8" RETURN. If you are talking about 7/8" at the flats you will be able to go a little wider at the but WHICH A TOW, #BP- MA-56-B at 1.5"WIDE, 4 1/4" TALL, 1 15/16" RETURN. If the .40 is a C wt barrel then You will want to build a Dickert from his early period and will need the Track of the Wolf # BP-LANC-2-B INVESTMENT CAST BRASS 1 7/8" WIDE, 5" TALL, 2 1/16" RETURN..

i LIKE using the track of the wolf catalog full size photos of parts to build the project on paper. Photo copy the various parts and place them where they need to be. helps get it planed out. I took the numbers from the # 15 catalog so it may not be helpful in that the parts maybe discontinued. You can go to their web site for a look at the stuff there. http://www.trackofthewolf.com/List/Item.aspx/687/3

i 've inletted a colrain 42", A profile flaired, and a small siler inletted, #4davis trigger set all inlayed. this is gonna be a small rifle, all i've ever built is biggg ones. i just can't think small, i guess. the butt plate is the question,i'm looking for a wider return. the one i have has a 7/8" width.
