Outstanding craftsmanship is a severe understatment. Just waiting for your posts is worth alot more than the price of admission. Words just dont do justice to your work and abilities.
-
WOW!!!! How did you cut the spiral section??
Hope you'll show us the building of the rest of the gun.
Best regards
Rolf

Ok ! My mind is sufficiently blown !
Question ! In one of the picture/diagrams it says "Cis - Yew - Taxusboom"
This seems to indicate that Yew wood is being used for the stock ! Is this the case ?
Yew is more of a soft wood ..... THE wood for an English Longbow, but for a gun stock ... a bit surprising
Mark
-
Amazing,simply amazing !!!!!!!

yew - https://www.google.pl/search?q=cis&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=h--kUcvVB43jO7P1gJgK&ved=0CEAQsAQ&biw=1440&bih=785 - wood core is better than a walnut - soft is white, the outer rim. core is perfect.

I'm glad You like it.

Fascinating, beautiful and educational - I think I can now see why wheel locks are always described as having been too expensive, back in the day, for the common man.
And you've barely started on the decoration!
Thanks for showing.

See the process of building a mechanism : http://americanlongrifles.org/forum/index.php?topic=25515.0
-
Holy! That's well to do. So what do you do in your spare time?? ;D
-
Truly a symphony in steel. I wish you could describe how you did this. If you describe in polish, I'll try to get it translated.
-
I am in awe.
I don't know how to start such a project.
wood I know. Metal at this level is beyond me.

I when I have free time --> I present to you pictures :) --> (https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi44.tinypic.com%2F1zj40p.jpg&hash=3f3557e89319c2fb32bc54e7ad7f1710e4f5b5bf) --> This detail is a homogeneous piece of steel. :)
-
The complexity and the required accuracy of this project is a labor intensive process. Nowadays I understand quit well why these mechanisms where seldom seen compared to the barrels which opened to the side( http://i40.tinypic.com/ilggtd.jpg) . Quote “Rebuilding these kind of systems require an enormous concentration and experience. When the systems opens to the side, as seen in the picture, the block is perpendicular to the gab in the barrel, this makes it easier to get a tight seal than in the system I am building (the block opens with a circular motion and requires a roundish opening in the barrel).” The mechanism in the picture is a lot easier to build. The project I am making together with Marcus (the client) is much more demanding. This project has given me the chance to relive and understand the atmosphere, the reality and the stress of the original builders and their work. Marcus does live far away from my workplace, but I am convinced that his Dutch heart will understand the work that I do.
For those who are not familiar with this work, I will add examples of the 16th century atmosphere to make you understand this project for the full 100%.
:)
-
Now that is just something to see right there. Fantastic!
Coryjoe
-
One hopes that Marcus' Dutch heart does indeed understand the work you are putting into this.
I'm having trouble wrapping my Pennsylvania brain around the enormity and quality of it.

Since the block is solid, do you put the ball into the barrel at the rear and then pour in the powder? Or will you drill a chamber in the breechblock, then load powder and then ball?

This mechanism would require some modification , modifications that are of age sixteenth century .These modifications are important for the efficiency of the mechanical. mechanism operates under enormous pressure ( main spring ).it is necessary

The amount of planning, the attention to detail, the meticulous craftsmanship, WOW! Your work is just awe inspiring. And I thought building a Swivel Breech action was complicated! Thats a walk in the park compaired to your recreating this Wheellock. OUTSTANDING!

I'll be building a Swivel Breech (already placed order) - but wheellock system. Two barrels - 6 wheels - 6 shots. :)

This serpentine is to hold the match?
And there is also a pyrite holder? Matchlock AND wheel lock in one gun?
-
so! yes ! This pistol has --> wheellock + snapmatchlock + breahkoading + self-spanning = 1 pistol :) you understand ?
-
I understand breechloading, yes. Snap match, yes. Wheel lock, yes.
Self-span, no, I do not understand yet. I can wait until you have made the parts. ;D
-
Self spanning... when you actuate the wheelock cock it both resets the lid of the pan and causes the wheel to wind... at least that is what I understand from the discussion on facebook.
-
Self spanning = cock is the key

Raz, you have such amazing springs. Do you forge them, then anneal, file to shape, then harden?
-
spring manufacturing steps : --> forging, cutting and sawing (file) --> hardening --> tempering . I the metal forming, not hardened steel - steel should be well annealed ( The annealed )
you understand what I wrote? :)

Raz, how did you make the square hole in the chain wheel? (photo above)
The wheel is very thick, with a nice fit on the shaft.
-
dear sir
do you use a mill or a lathe at all when your building a wheel lock ? or do you do it with a drill and file the old way.
thank you
Richard westerfield
-
I'm doing it manually - but an easy explanation for this activity is difficult - I will future prepare a report on the of this activity.

a few months ago, I bought a lathe. I lack the strength to work longer - and I works without a helper . but in the future - i shows, my handmade work methods. I will demonstrate my basic tools and simple equipment

Very nice. Spanish clasical guitar is pretty in its complexity and I appreaciate classical, rennaisance and baroque music. My fiancee used to dance flamenco... I on the other hand used to play tennerhorn in a German band so that is not a nice comparison... better for drinking beer. Tried learning how to play balalaika over about six years but my fingers just won't go that fast.

file - this is also a music note - as well as the breath of a man who dreams :)

I can see why the flintlock was so popular.....you could not afford to have a wheel lock made. ;D
-
flintlock was effective, inexpensive, does not break out. flintloc - be able to produce hundreds of thousands of copies. .flintlock, made it possible to master the American continent. flintlock, inspired many artists - craftsmen .Today in the U.S. there is a lot of great craftsmen - artists who create works of art flintlock.

That is really wonderful, Raz. This is why you were so quiet the last few days. Beautiful work. Beautiful.
-
I had to perform adjustments - amendment . system seems to be an uncomplicated - but this is an illusion . This is a difficult and ambitious project. This is a very valuable experience - it cost me so much work that normally would have built four ordinary wheellock - I had to make adjustments to the plan . This project gave me a lot of invaluable learning. some work waiting for me, but that's way down the hill
-
system seems to be an uncomplicated - but this is an illusion .
Believe me, while viewing this incredible handiwork, at no time did the word "uncomplicated" enter my thinking.
Hats off to you, Master Raz.

I didn't understand, either. Let me take a guess.
refer to your barrel:
1) Do you twist the barrel to make the spiral pattern?
2) If you do twist the barrel, is a mandrel, or rod, in the bore when you twist it?
-
Danny, look again at the pictures in the beginning of the thread. I believe these are filed by hand. The spiral does not go all the way around the barrel. When Raz filed the muzzle spiral, the pattern does go all the way around, because it will be exposed beyond the end of the stock.

I wish you would show us how you do this type of work on youtube ? what type of metal do you use it seems like its soft so you can file the art work
thank you
Richard westerfield
-
Raz's metal work appears effortless, like he has some butter-soft metal, but it's either iron or steel. This takes muscle, sharp tools, and time.
We are very fortunate to see the progressive pictures.
-
cock - 1% C steel (carbon). - It is "hard" steel. - The hardness of steel is an ally. of course - work takes time, and understanding of the tools and steel
-
( cock ) - I cut the power tool.
but the ordinary sculpture work - simple tools 100% (hammer, chisel, file) --- THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! style of work, cutting lines, climate composition - THIS IS A close link with the working methods .
basic tools = climate of the times of which says "poem - poetry work"
I hope this is understandable
-
it shows larger photo.
the picture shows the type of tool
larger - is seen "drama", the process of
here is different - undercut line runs to a not single sequence
pictures speak for me

I think many "modern" people look at work like this and believe it to be impossible without CNC machinery, elves, or space aliens. I believe "artistry" is a word too lightly used these days. I'm not a gun builder, but I imagine this puts the hurt of humility on many contemporary "artisans" who start with manufactured barrels, locks, triggers, precarves, and furniture. They might be termed "assemblers." And I'm not trying to take anything away from those who make well constructed arms.
While viewing this thread a comparison came to me. I was thinking about making a fine boxwood baroque recorder with powered lathe and drillpress, as opposed to entirely handmaking a Boehm system flute in gold. It also makes me think I wasted my youth by focusing on security.
I cannot thank you enough for this.
-
Nothing can replace hand work.
What was once in everyman's hands has been willingly given over to the machinery in the name of efficiency. This means everything is cheap and affordable. A downside is that we have forgotten how to make things. As a society, we have lost our connection with the earth and ground from which everything springs.
Now only the rich can afford handmade.
Thank you Raz, for your excellent photo poetry essay on the wheel.
-
I'm moved - I miss the contact with people who think alike . I'm afraid to live and die - and be convinced that the lost time - such words , are important to me! . is important to me that you love people - what is in the depths of our soul is the most important!
Thank you guys

It's all about the love, brother.

Hand work is truly a dying art form. Raszpla is a true artist and very gifted but well honed in his ability. With the amount of time and muscle fatigue involved in his work it really is all about the love. Well spoken Tom. And thanks Raszpla for sharing. Bob

I am trying to understand the very complicated mechanism.
That spring holds the drive key in the axel. The pyrite hammer can be held against the wheel under pressure, with the key in the shaft.
-or-
the pyrite hammer is dis-engaged from the shaft, with no drive key in the end of the shaft. Hammer can swing out of the way for cleaning, or a new pyrite.
Do I understand?
Raz, this is lovely workmanship. A sonnet in steel.
-
(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi39.tinypic.com%2F2hp2l3n.jpg&hash=300d0849db09bc6f88e9e5cdc5eb1c884a791755)
when the main string is tension - the wheel is automatically locked by the hook wheels - then you need to disengage the clutch hammer. - when he is on the clutch, the hammer is lowered to cover the pan - then the hammer spring maintains the hammer on the cover pan with adequate pressure -- the clutch is disengaged! you can shoot
do you understand?
:)
in a few days will be video
:)

Can't wait for that video. Be sure to put powder in the pan!

Raz, as always, a huge thanks for showing us all of your work on this.
I have a business idea for you- Do you know about those web-cameras where people watch things like baby eagles in a nest?
You need to set up a web-camera in your shop so folks can watch as you work 24 hours a day!
You can get some advertisers to scroll advertisements along the bottom and earn some extra money each time somebody clicks onto your site. ;D
-
KL,
¡That is a GREAT idea!

We could see what you have for lunch, what kind of shoes you wear.
I am happy with the pictures and descriptions. It is so much work to document the process in addition to the work he's already doing, it would slow Raz's gun work down. Maybe one of us could go over and film Raz at work. I volunteer for this.
-
maybe someday someone will invite me to the U.S. - then it will be possible, do documentary film showing the work process.
-
You can come to my house. I will take you to the Metropolitan Museum. We can go into the basement and study wheel locks in our own hands. You must wear gloves.
-
I have to catch up on what I have at work - still in the queue waiting for a lot of work - when I lead the work to the end, and only then will it be possible my visit to the U.S.

Ras,
I have been watching your interesting efforts on the wheelock. It is great that you share this with all who are following along. Your drawings and images help greatly in explaining the mechanical aspects of the lock.
You apparently are using a CAD program of some sort to apply drawings to photos. Specifically, what program do you use to do this?
Keep up the good work.
Jim Westberg
-
Jim, and Raz, I am amazed by the addition of new parts to build up the lockplate, using dovetails and riveting. The multiple parts become one. This has been very educational for me. I will use some of the tricks learned here on my own projects. Thank you, Raz.
-
Just have to say I am in amazement at this project. Please continue the updates. A true work of art.

I must make a confession. :-[
I have not been the least bit interested in wheelocks--until this thread. I think it makes the point that understanding leads to appreciation. You have expanded my universe, Raz, and I am extremely grateful. I used to tell my students that the more you learn, the more you can enjoy the world.
I think I may have missed it, but where are you located?

So much of this technology reminds me of wood joinery, the tenons, dowels and dovetails. The screw was a real advance in how things were assembled.
-
yes - it is the same concept
-
Raz works the steel as if it is wood.
-
Of course the steel, and wood - these are two different materials . but the carpenters , and the locksmith profession - that two close cousins.
Old crafts - there are several groups of materials - just a few basic tools - this is similar to a violin, which has only four strings .... :)

That is so fast, and so sure! Congratulations, my friend! So much work, and now you have done it!
Raz, How do you clean the lock after firing?
I always wonder, because of all the the antique locks that have survived. The mechanism is very complicated, and the wheel must be very hard to clean?
-
Wonderful work

This is a weapon to people who are not afraid to dream! - for such a man, cleaning weapons is a trifle :)

Raz, I just worked the County Fair, and hundreds of people saw me carving my gun. There was a blacksmith, spinner, weaver, basket maker, candlemaker, furniture builder, and even a fly-tyer all under one roof, demonstrating their art. Some people really like this, and others have no idea what is going on. Some people, I hope, will try their hand at some art or craft.
I do believe that some children may not absorb this on a conscious level. But in ten years or twenty, they may have a sudden urge to make something with their hands, besides sliding their fingers over an iPhone.

Yes ...
manual work is an excellent environment for "meditation"
manual work - which man gives himself - then there is a chance to find a priceless peace , in the " silence" - easier to find respect for other people...
:)

Manual labor turns the raging lion into a kitten. (unless you're an irishman with centuries of anger, but that anger can be use to drive the chisel!)

On the contrary, Raz, you have been very busy. You have made a true work of art that is beyond words. This is incredible. Thank you, thank you.

Raz,
Your skill in mixed medium marquetry is impressive! Museum quality even.
I'll have to see this whole thread from the beginning, then i'll probably have to comment more!
Be safe!
