Nice Rifle. The patchbox is closely related to the patchbox on my William Britton Rifle(WV) in the library. While this is not Britton's work it might be a good place to start your research. Thanks for sharing.

I've seen a couple of similar patchboxes on guns with non-standard inlay work, such as this rifle has, and think they have a southern connection. I have wondered if these rifles might be from South Carolina, where research has not yet provided us with a good list of gunmakers from that state. Shelby Gallien

What are the initials?   So typical of a signed gun, very difficult to determine what letters they are.    I won't even take a guess
at the second letter????.......Don

Gun has overtones of Indiana rifles in its architecture, and style. Could also be Ohio River Valley which takes in a lot of territory, but it does have strong similarities to details out of that region.

Just received Jeff Jaeger's book on John Small, famed Indiana gunmaker, and am struck by the similarity in the patchbox design. Small died in the early 1820s and this gun is later than  that. The style of inlays has some similar overtones, the leaf/sword stands out; Small used the sword on his pipe/axe blades as a touch mark. Just some random musings on my part and until the maker is identified we won't know who made it. Not sure that Small had any children who made guns, but the maker of this one may have seen one and was inspired by it, or could have been a relative. If you can, take a look at the book on Small, which is well illustrated, and compare what you see there with your gun.
