Since my walnut club butt was such a success I thought I'd post my latest gun build progress with pictures.
This one is a 14 gauge / .69 caliber smooth bore. I got the barrel Tuesday from TOW, their French Musket, 46" octagon-to-round, 1.250" at breech. I had the barrel channel roughed out to 3/4" round & the ramrod hole done.
The lock is Chambers Christian's Springs.
The mounts are sheet brass. I'm debating on no butt plate.

While I'd be tempted to keep the butt naked, cherry is a little tender to be taking ground contact abuse when loading. I'd have to ponder on that. Be a bit gentle--I'm looking at that wrist and the grain direction I think I'm seeing.

I put the butt plate on it.

I just took a chunk of cherry, Grinslade's book & started sketching.

Keb; Sir, I like the butt plate style you have chosen to use and I say great job of in-litting the butt plate. Please keep us posted as your work on the 'Club Butt Build" continues to completion. Thanks for sharing. AJ

You work fast! What's the drop at comb and heel?
-
Nice! That really does fit the old "canoe paddle" gag line about the club butt style. Wonder how that rounded butt will shoulder and shoot? Let us know when it happens.

What's the drop at comb and heel?
The drop at the comb is only 2 1/2". I'm not sure where to measure the heel on a round butt gun. It could be anywhere between 5" & 8 1/2" :/

Keb;
I love this gun, but would be a little worried about the shape of the butt, and how it will transfer recoil. Keep us posted.

Well I thought I'd finally figured out what a canoe gun looked like!! ;D :D Nice work!

It's mostly done. It still is tender though. Only 1 coat of oil and it drank it down like a sailor on shore leave. I'll post more better pictures tomorrow.
