Got back from today's table shoot at Allen Coon's range and have to say that it was one of the best days I have spent at a shoot in a long time. The weather couldn't have been better, the company was outstanding and the competition was very close. Robin and Allen put on a super party and are to be commended. Needless to say I will be back in December, if it's not below zero. If you haven't tried this game, you need to.

Mark, I'll post some pic's later.

Did any of you guys find Carl's spotting scope? I know you guys beat up on him but he didn't intend to give up the scope, LOL
Thanks
-
Charlie,
Heard you were at a party, couldn't have been as good as this one, you wwere missed. We didn't know for sure whose scope it was but it is safe with Allen.

I had a family reunion to attend. Wish that I could have been there a gave you guys some competition. LOL
thanks for the info I will let Carl know. Hope to see you in Dec.

-
A 2.7" string? World class! This table shoot game is catching on. Thanks for the photos.
-
Looks like a very fine group of shooters! How far were you shooting from? We may just have to do this at our club. No one really wants to shoot chunk anymore, as we have a hard time getting up and down. We could be out of shape... Can't have anything to do with age I wouldn't think... :o
-
That looks like a lot of fun, sorry I missed it. Those winning targets are pretty impressive.....who was the winner?.......Don
-
Candle Snuffer the scoring is the same as chunk. Everyone shoots off the tables provided like the ones in the pictures at 30 yards. And you are allowed peep sights. Hey you get to shoot off a table and use peep sights, it couldn't get any better! LOL
-
Just not sure that I'd buy a used car from any of that gang.
Looks good, a fun way to spend the day for sure.
Paul
-
I'd like to try that sometime. Our guys don't want to try anything new and it's getting to be where I'm just about the only one left that even shoots chunk anymore. Those shoots out in Indiana and Missouri are a bit far for me due to gas prices, but maybe I'll git thar some day. We had a good little old-time chunk shoot at the JJJJ Ranch yesterday. The numbers are down. We only had 9 shooters, but included a new feller who appears to be hooked. Paul, you planning on making the turkey shoot at Shelby's next month?
-
Bob where is the JJJJ range/ shoot located
-
Looks like fun and ballast's are alowed too. ;D
-
Not braggin' or anything but I won the match this time around. We shoot thirty paces, guns must weigh under 13lbs(includes sights) and NO teflon!
I also used a 45cal UH with open sights, rear notch and front post.
Lotsa FUN!
Mike M.
-
The 4J shoot is located on Rt243 at Deering.
Tell me where you are coming from and maybe
I can be a little more specific.
Bob Roller
-
A procedural question, if I may. Does one shooter run all of his shots and then another comes up for his? Or do you set up 3 or 4 at a time and alternate shooting? You'd need a lot of tables for everyone to shoot at once. I'm just trying to find out how you folks do this before I try to talk some out here into trying this.
-
Bob central Ky
-
Kermit, we average 15-25 shooters,so far we only have needed 2 tables with a target stand for each table.Three targets per stand. We start by posting your spotter. In this case 6 spotters. Six guys take one warmup shot(I'll call this a relay) taking turns on the table while the other guys are loading. Your next group of spotters and loaded guns are positioned on the staging rack behind the shooting benches (you might be able to see the staging rack in one of the pic's). The range is shut down while the next group of spotters are posted and the first posted spotters are returned. Start the procedure all over again for the remainder of warmups and go right into scoreable targets. To keep things running smoothly guys need to keep staging their spotters and loading their guns. BUT, a shooter can take a break anytime. A time limit for getting all shots shot should be in place especially if you have a big turnout that day. Like 10AM-3PM
The idea is to have a relaxed get together with friends and have a shootn' match at the same time.
Our next shoot is Dec. 28 I hope to see some new faces.
Feel free to ak questions. Thanks, Mike

Bob where is the JJJJ range/ shoot located
Like Bob R. said it's on Rt. 243 (Marion Pike) at Deering, Ohio just over 3 1/2 miles east of Coal Grove (US 52). It's Bill Large's old range in the holler behind his shop. They've been holding chunk matches back there for years. In 2009 we started shooting old style matches which consist of 5 rounds for score at 30 yards off hand and then 5 rounds for score off the chunk at 60 yds. Other than the off hand it's the same as any other chunk shoot. In this case we shoot for group twice. We had perfect weather this year. Although the forecast was for partly sunny, it stayed overcast all day. Bill's daughters always come to watch and enjoy seeing shooters continuing what he was a pioneer of in the area. After the shoot we gather in the shop for hotdogs and snacks before we head home. The number was down this year but the competition was stiff. We did have a new feller show up and shoot and I believe that we may have added a new member to the sport. If you're coming from central KY, hit I-64 and head east to the Cannonsburg exit. Go north into Ashland and cross the Ohio River. Turn left onto US 52 and go about a mile and take the Coal Grove exit (Ohio 243). The shoot is held on the 2nd Saturday of October once a year.
-
I may have to try something like this at one of our club shoots. Just to make things different!
-
Sounds like a fun shoot. I will try to remember it. Thanks
-
I see that you're from Winchester. That's about an hour and 45 minutes from Coal Grove. Easy drive. GoogleEarth shows Exit 181 on I-64 to be the shortest way to Ashland. That's the exit before Cannonsburg going east. Put it on your calendar. It's a fun little shoot.
-
Will do. Thanks
-
Well I finally slowed down enough to check in. Like the other said we had just a perfect day there was a good competitive shooting match, and lots of good fellowship. We did play around with an aggregate payout. This time it seemed to go well. Once again we just couldn't have asked for a better day. Thanks to Allan and Julia for putting up with us, and thanks to Alan Tm performing their duties as chef. You will notice in one of Spiderman's pictures. The grill is in the background, smoking away make and some wonderful hamburgers and hotdogs. I would like to thank those who donated prizes my lovely bride Londean donated somewhere around 10 dozen cookies Mike Majeski donated a Indiana barn wood shooting box. Mark Herman donated a very nice powder measure. Sorry if I forgot anybody but the donated prizes really make the shoots that much better. Thanks all of you who have supported us and we hope to see you on December 28 at the Coon range . One other thing I would like to thank Paul for all his support and advice. He hasn't been able to shoot with as much this year, but he has helped more in the background than most of you can possibly know.

Son of a gun, I thought "Robin" was a girls name???? Boy, was I wrong. You guys might get me to come out of
retirement, besides, someone has to be last...........Don

This sounds like a lot of fun! Are you still having the shoot on the 28th? I'd like to give it a try.
~Tony
-
Yes, the shoot is still on for the 28th.
I hope the weather cooperates!
Mike
-
That sound like a fun match. Will have to try this at my club this spring.
-
Mike,
Spoke with Robin the other evening and told him I won't make December. I'm hoping the Doc takes out the pins in my finger next week but he's saying it may be Spring before the hand is back in action. Give my regards to all who show up and I hope thw weather is good and the competition is tough.
Mark
-
Mark, sorry you won't be there. Take care of yourself and have a safe winter and a Merry Christmas.
See you in the spring.
Mike
-
Mike,
Thanks. And to all reading the post, A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SaFE AND hAPPY NEW YEAR.
Mark
-
Oh yes, we will have shoot on the 28th. I have spoken with Alan about this weather situation before. I'm sure if it's not as cooperative as we like will work our way around it. Hope to see all of you can be there in the meantime, stay safe and stay in touch.
-
I just checked the 10 day forecast for the AW Coon range and greater southern orange Indiana, four December 28, it looks like the weather man or woman is calling for a high 34° partly cloudy skies the low the night before is supposed to be 24°, there will be a good fire in the shop and we will start a fire at the range, I'd like to try to get a feel for who thinks are coming. I'm thinking that sounds like good weather have a big pot of chili and or vegetable soup. If some of you wanted to bring something to go along with that would be great. You can either post back here or send me an email. I'm just trying to get a grip on how many people to expect as per usual, we'll have a good time.
-
@!*% Robin your're going ahead without me any way! Seriously, I hope everyone shows up and has a great safe shoot. I'm sorry I won't be able to be with you but the therapist just started moving the finger earlier this week and it's going to be a while. Please tell everyone I hope they had a wonderful holiday and wish them a safe and healthy new year.
Mark
-
Dang, Mark, it's pretty bad when you can't even eat soup! Stick with that PT!
-
Kermit,
Soup is the easy part, when you have a straw. My wife is cutting everything else for me, but I am feeding myself. Everything is shrinking from lack of use, except my waistline.

Starting time table shoot Saturday the 28th
I've been watching the weather forecast, Saturday is looking very encouraging for a shoot. I have spoken with a couple of the shooters were thinking that starting a little later in the day would be better. We were thinking maybe 11 o'clock, we should still be able to finish ample time for everybody to get home at a reasonable hour. One of to put this up in front of you and get your opinion. Please spread the word to anybody that may not have received this. I'm sending it on email to all that I have and posting it on Facebook, American long rifles and Panthers Lodge. It has been the consensus so far that we would be into a little warmer part of the day. The cook has informed me that we are having chili. Anything you might like to bring to go with that would be deeply appreciated and I'm sure that we will have a great time. Please respond as quickly as you can everybody be safe. Hope to see you Saturday. I know some of you will not be able to make it, you will be sorely missed, but if you would please help spread the word. I would consider it a personal favor. Thanks, Robin
-
Ok , it's game on for the table shoot tomorrow at the Coon range 11:00 AM weather forecast looks real good. The range looks real good. Hope to see it much of you there tomorrow. Be safe.
-
I'm sorry if this has been answered already, I couldn't find it.
Can someone please explain exactly how this game is shot?? Does someone have a manual, or set of rules?
It seems like an absolute blast. I'd love to do this for our club.
-
I have never shot a table shoot, Dane, but would like to. It seems to me the "rules" are not a universal and sanctioned thing, as if established by, say, the NMLRA. So I think it would vary a little. Someone could correct my misapprehensions, but I understand it's pretty much like a chunk shoot elevated off the ground and shot at shorter range. And with a weight limit for the rifles. How far off am I?
-
Kermit,
The only thing you left out are the sights. Chunk matches require open rear sights and the table guns can use rear peeps, shaders are permitted. The weight limit is 13#. I won't be there but I certainly hope the weather holds and everyone has a fun an SAFE shoot. See you in the Spring.
Mark
-
Where is the Coon range? Directions appreciated. May have a friend or two up for going for a look-see tomorrow. Thanks much.
-
I just need the basics. At that point, I should be able to make up the rest. Distance, number of shots, how the spotter thing works, etc., would be nice.
Just a basic rundown of how it works.
At this point, our club only does trail walks.
-
Coon,s range is located near Glenwood Indiana. About 6 miles south of town. For more specific directions you may call Robin Warner @ 1-765-561-3305
Hope to see some new faces, Mike
-
Thanks Spiderman. We are in SW Indiana. Hope you all have a great shoot. We hope to join you at a future get-together.
-
I was thinking of trying to make this shoot but it just didn't happen. I don't know what kind of weather they had in Indiana
but it hit 50 degrees here in central Pa., what a beautiful day. I have been suffering with a bout of bursitis in my right shoulder
which does not go too well with shooting. Make sure someone gives us some results from the shoot..........Don
-
Hi All, we had a great time at the Table shoot this past Sat. The weather was AWESOME! I think we started off at 40degrees and ended with a balmy 50 degrees. Sunshine and a few clouds. We had around 15 shooters. Some from Ohio, Kentuk and Indiana. We shot 10 shots and payed back 1st, 2nd and 3rd places in each relay. The competition is starting to get a lot better each time we have this shoot. I think the guys are starting to get the hang of it! The prizes and $ were spread out pretty evenly. Our next shoot is towards the end of Feb. I am not sure of the exact date, but once I find out I will let you all know.

Mike,
Thanks for the pics and comments. What kind of strings were shot. You couldn't have ordered better weather for the 28th of December.
Mark
-
Mark, I don't know any string measurements, maybe Robin will chime in and let you know.
You are right about the weather, it was GREAT!
Mike
-
Thanks for the pictures, looks like all had good weather and a good time. Looks and sounds as if this table shooting is catching on. Great to hear! :)
-
Good to see the smoke poles working. Anything to keep'em shooting. A few of us went shooting today out at my cabin but there wasnt any green grass, knee deep snow and a -11 degrees. Sure look forward to the NMLRA shoot in Pheonix in March and maybe the Nebraska Territorial in April.
-
Hey everybody, I finally got a chance to slow down after the grandsons birthday party the post something about the table shoot. We have 13 registered shooters and myself scoring. The numbers break down as follows. Ron B. Had 2 first place. 1 second place on the third Mr. Byrge came up with one first in one second. Mike M. Came up with one first and two thirds. Bill D. Came up one first two seconds and one third. Bo Courtney proved to be the king of the day 2 first three seconds and one third. Dave Collier came up with one first one second three thirds/ Jerry Barnes came up with two seconds one third, Tim Shaul came up with two first and one third in the best X at 0. 046 everybody else had a really good time. My thanks to Mike Majeski and Mitch Warner for helping run range. A special thanks to Mike for the shooting box which was run off a special shoot by buying an individual target anywhere from 1 to 10 of them in which you could put in behind her regular scoring target, but they were only scored for the box which Dave Collier took home. Thanks to everybody that donated additional prizes and the pictures that Mike posted are really good. We couldn't have asked for a better day to shoot. We had a light wind. around 40. when we s was around 40. We started in somewhere around 50 in the competition was very close, friendly, just the way we like to seeit At any rate, thanks everybody for coming. Really miss those of you who were unable to make it to do family issues and our prayers are with Mark Herman hoped that his injured hand lets him get back to the range very soon.

the rules are real simple a table or bench and a target most shoot at 30 yards .well their are your rules - you make them up to keep your shooters happy and to fit in the range you have..the oldest shoots still running over in mo. only have one rule no peep sight or scopes scoring same way some go by best shots in the whole match- by best couple in every round and some like chunk string. your shoot your rules.the best one I saw was posted -you know what we are trying to do -don't !$@! us off .that was the one rule
-
Calling all table shooters and those who would like to be table shooters, the February 8 shoot Allen Coon's is being rescheduled to February 22. Let's look to start around 10:30 AM in the meantime, stay warm, stay safe and give somebody a helping hand whenever you can.

I read the quoted post several times couldn't quite figure the last two or three lines out. At any rate, if any of you need any information about what were doing in East Central Indiana on the table shoot get in touch with me. I'll be glad to send you what we've got never really heard the rule about not torquing somebody off.

Guys this is great! Sam Koger here, new to the forum, but not ML shooting. I have shot with Mr. Coon, Ron Boron and a few others I believe I saw pictured here at Pall Mall/Alvin York shoot, and at Friendship. I have not shot chunk in years, due to having back surgery, just cant lay down prone and shoot much. Have been out of competition last 4-5 years, due to work, taking care of parents in poor health, and life in general. Starting to get back into it, might want to get one of these started here locally! I could shoot this type match with no issues to my back, as well as offhand. Great post!
-
Sam,
Welcome aboard. I have had similar problems, with my back, and have found this new game to be fun, competitive and addictive. You owe it to yourself to give it a try.
Mark
-
Hello Sam welcome to the forum. Lots of good people here. Good to see your interest in a table shoots there's anything that we can do to help you please let us know.
-
Robin..........this table shooting keeps gnawing at me. As soon as the weather breaks I must get out my little Dave Motto
40 cal gun off the wall and shoot it again, it has rested long enough. What is the rule on peep sights? I was thinking of
putting one on this little gun. It will be a traditional type peep sight and might help some with aiming. Right now I'm
playing with a sore shoulder......bursitis..........Don
-
Don-
When we get to Lewisburg I will let you know what not to do. Wish you would come maybe I can beat you.
See you in a couple of weeks
-
Don
The rule is pretty simple. You may use any type of peep sight, that you like. However, if it is adjustable. You will not be able to adjust it during competition. I have seen all manner peep sight, show up. I am personally using a long bar peep sight, which is nothing more than a piece of 1/2 by 1/8 inch steel turned up 90° with a hole drilled and tapped to hold the aperture. But I have seen once again all manner of them out there. I believe that we shoot with a group of true gentleman in the we do not need to worry much about them being adjusted. Come on out and have a good time when you can.
-
Robin
After a year of table shoots which sight open or peep is winning most of the matches?
Richard Henderson
-
Dick,
I'm sure Robin will be on this one soon but in the mean time. Mike Medjeski has been doing some serious b---tt kicking on a regular basis using open sights, while others of us are starting to get the hang of it with peeps. Can't tell you what the percentages are but you will find both on the tables.
Mark
-
Richard
I would really love to give you a straightforward definitive answer. However, I do have to agree with what Mark says Mike Majeski has been doing very well. He has won most of the first years matches with a set of open sights. I believe they were square notch with a blade for site at our last shoot. And please don't hold me to this. I believe Bo Courtney was running a set of open sights and came away with lion share the winnings David Collier is running a set of open sights with a clarifier behind them. For most of the first year shoots and at our last shoot used open sights. I believe, he has done exceptionally well. On the other hand, Bill D has been running and set a peep sights and has been running in the top three or four every time Tim S shot my table rifle using a set of peep sights and did very well last time. Which is encouraging. As he had not been shooting well for the last year or so. To give you a straightforward answer. The number say that open sights have been doing very well and I would like to think as it was our desire when we started table matches to put the shooter back in the game instead of the equipment we may have actually succeeded in that.
You are very local to me if you'd like to get together sometime it be really happy to try to discuss it with you. Just give me a call if you don't have my number. Allen Coon does. I'm sorry if this seems like a bit of a runaround answer, but in short, the peep system seems to have helped those who are having some issues with their eyes, but a person skilled with open sights can expect to do very well.
As for me I run a peep sights. The old blue eyes just ain't what they used to be.
-
Robin.........I would probably make a long peep sight with the rear end bent up at 90 degrees, maybe do some fancy file work
on it. Theoretically you should shoot better with a peep sight since you are lengthening your sight radius, but, when you run
up against a good shooter like Mike, it doesn't really matter. This chunk gun shooting, or table shooting, all boils down to how
well you can see your sights and target, and have a good shootin' gun.........Don

There in lies the problem!
-
don robin -paul- and dis are all shooting a homemade very crude peep and doing great with them, I questioned how rough they looked but when you looked threw peep hole worked just great.it has been a toss up on the peeps .mike m has been thumping every one with regular open .couple other people have also done very well with opens.
-
I think think every set of chunk gun rules have the same statement about adjustable sights. If you give it some thought, we
would recommend changing your sight on every shot. Kind of like "chasing" your last shot. If and when I put that peep sight
on my gun, I will somehow make sure it does not hit right at the top of my front sight, or right on my aiming point. It can
hit my sighter target anywhere else, high, low, right or left. To those who are not familiar with chunk gun or table shooting,
if your gun will shoot at the very top of your front sight, it will soon chew up your aimiing point. Must get that sight made and
when the weather clears, get out and shoot that 40 cal. gun. It's been years since I shot this gun but I ran a patch down the
barrel yesterday and came out clean, no brown on it...............Don
-
I've never shot a Chunk Shoot or a Table Shoot, I'd love to try it! Hopefully this next one in Feb. it can't be as complicated as it sound.
Could be I'm just over thinking it. ;)

-
Don,
I learned what you are saying the hard way. My first table shoot I was shooting into my sighter at about 10 o'clock, nice group too. After a little while I was shooting outside my spotter at about 4 o'clock. Never dawned on me that my sighter had completely chenged due to being 1/3 shot away and my sight picture had moved with the remaining spotter. Now I shoot about 2" below my spotter at 6 o'clock. Haven't fiqured out how to hit a moving spider yet.

-
mr nienaber go to either one you will have a ball.chunk is quite a bit harder 60 yards and to do well you need a heavy chunk gun and good solid chunk.the bench shoots are a ball also- 30 yards. almost any muzzle loader is fine. I feel in love with chunk because top shooter I just happened to start shooting with are great.they tell you everything if you ask and will gladly show you the equipment.they will tell you who made it -what powder load - TYPE OF POWDER-ball size and patch they use. you can see the sights and targets they use.its all fun for them on who is the best shot.
-
T. Nienaber
You are absolutely correct. It is not nearly so complicated as it sounds, or I wouldn't be able to do it. I see you're from Northern Kentucky surely you can't be that far away. I will send you an email with some shoot dates and some other information. Hopefully you can come up and see us and of course may be give us some shooting lessons. Lord knows I need them. In the meantime, stay safe stay warm.
-
Robin,
Thanks! I plan on coming up next month. Hopefully the weather breaks, as far as the shooting I wouldn't plan on me giving any lessons. ;)

Hello
22 February is drawing ever closer. I think were going to try paying out the top three X's on each relay. And Keeping score on all targets with prizes for the top three overall aggregates. Hope see a lot of you there. I think will have a lot of fun and I certainly hope the weather cooperates in the meantime, be safe.
-
Robin, how is your match fee set up?
-
We shoot a 10 shot match at a cost of $20. The club keeps a percentage for operating cost and the rest is paid back in monetary prizes, trophies, etc., depending on what shoot your attending.
-
I just took a look at the 10 day forecast and keeping in mind as an old Shawnee Indian told me, weatherman speak with forked tongue. It looks like we could be in the upper 40s or lower 50s. On the 22nd for the table shoot at the AW Coon farm. Right now they're calling for it to be dry through the day raining that night. I would suggest you at least bring your rubber boots with you, AW has done some wonderful things with the drainage down there this time he year never know what you’re going to get hope see you all there in the meantime, stay safe stay warm and have a blessed day. ;D
-
Ok folks, someone ask what time we were starting Saturday. Good question. Thanks tables will be set up by 9:30 AM. I would like to see most people started shooting by 10 o'clock or so, that should get everything done and still get us home at a pretty decent hour. Be sure to come rain or shine, hot or cold. If the weather's not real cooperative will a be shooting from the barn. I talked to AW today and we have contingency plans. Hope to see you all on Saturday.
-
Boy, this sounds real interesting!
I picked up a table shoot pamphlet and sample target at the Conner Longrifle show last weekend.
I have a couple of questions.
1- Are shaders allowed over the sights?
2- I am a little fuzzy on the use of the spotters. Are they as large as the target itself and stapled or taped on the face of the target? Or is the spotter a smaller aiming spot taped or stapled upon the target face?
I do realize what the function of the spotter is, just not sure of the above (the actual mechanics of its size and placement or attachment to the target itself).
Thanks for any clarification. Hope to join you all at Coons farm soon!
-
shaders are allowed
spotter is an aiming point
you place actual target where your group is hitting
look back in this post to see an actual target
Mike
-
Target(s) are on p.1 of this thread. What can be hard to understand is just how the targets are placed and shot. I've read some pretty good descriptions of the process, but never a step-by-step narrative of just what an individual chunk or table shooter does. It can be a little hard to understand for someone who has never seen it done. Time for a tutorial? Maybe one already exists somewhere. Time for a video?
:)
-
Thanks for the replies guys. I looked at the photo on page one. It looks to me that the spotter is a full sheet with an aiming point that is applied upon the face of the scoring target.
If this is the case, is it taped to the scoring target by the shooter or stapled to it by a competitor as targets are switched (as per the pamphlet I read)?
Thanks for further clarification.
-
We are having a shoot tommorrow, I'll try to take a step by step photo progression.
Hope to see some of you there! Mike
-
Please do a photo step by step of the process if at all possible. In about a month I'm going to do a Table shoot at the monthly Novelty shoot at Fort Osage Muzzleloaders. I think that I have got most of the idea in mind but just how you post the targets and shot them is a little fuzzy.
RB
-
Just got back from the table shoot at Allen Coon's range. What a party! Thanks go out to Robin and Allen for putting the party together and hosting it. Not only did 19 shooters show up but the weather must have been ordered by a higher authority, 52* and sunny on February 22. I would hazard a guess that a good time was had by all, it just didn't sound like it after a few shots that turned out to be mis-directed. There were a lot of spiders killed and a lot that escaped unscathed. The best part was seeing everyone again. Looking forward to the next one in May.
Mark
-
Glad the weather cooperated with you guys Mark. Looking forward to more posts about the shoot and hopefully a picture or two from any that attended!
-
Here are some pics of the shoot. I will try to explain the process of posting targets.
(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi167.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu156%2Fmmedjeski%2FTableShootFeb2014002_zpsd6f50767.jpg&hash=22f63b09985fbc07f55c7db0d7e997d041babc51) (http://s167.photobucket.com/user/mmedjeski/media/TableShootFeb2014002_zpsd6f50767.jpg.html)
We use a piece of cardboard that measures 14" x 14" then each shooter puts his own spotter on the cardboard. The idea (as in chunk shootn') is to have your group hit somewhere off the spotter so you don't tear up your aiming point.
(https://americanlongrifles.org/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi167.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fu156%2Fmmedjeski%2FTableShootFeb2014009_zps5e514717.jpg&hash=d9ccd1e0f375b0be2e68bedc01e9670de299523d) (http://s167.photobucket.com/user/mmedjeski/media/TableShootFeb2014009_zps5e514717.jpg.html)
We then shoot three practice shots before placing a target in your group.

Here is the staging rack and our host A.W. Coon. The spotters have targets posted and the guns are loaded (unprimed,of course). They are ready to go down range after the group before them get there shots off and the range is shut down.

Here are some of the guys posting and returning spotters. This is where it gets a little confusing because it is just a process of relays. We have 13 (counting practice shots) so there will be 13 trips down range to post and return spotters. We all take turns walking down range. Some people enjoy the walk, some don't. It really doesn't matter. Some times one person will take 3 spotters from the staging rack. Sometimes there will be 6 guys walking down range. Just keep it flowing. Some times guys are "visiting" and loose track of the rotation. Oh, well he'll get in the next relay. It is advised to have the guys mark up on there spotters and to put there name on it. The spotters will be handled by different guys all day, so they have to know which way is up when putting spotter in the target rack.

I hope this helps some to understand the way we do it in S.E. Indiana. Of couse you can do it the way that best fits your situations.
We pay back 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each relay also pay top three for overall agg score
A good time was had by all!
Mike
-
I had a great time yesterday at the shoot! Thanks to everyone, and I can't wait until the next!!
Great bunch of guys and a really laid back shoot!
~Tony
-
Great pictures thanks for the information. It is a bit clearer now. I don't suppose that there might be a little bit of "heckling" going on? I can just imagine a guy taking his sweet time to shoot waiting of the wind or light or something and a few fellow competitors waiting in the wings getting a little impatient might offer some friendly encouragement or something?
Richard
-
Thanks a lot for posting this information Mike. Crystal clear now!
If a fellow uses a gun that hits poa/poi, can he use a fresh spotter in the same relay as his spotter gets shot up? Otherwise, I see that a gun that doesn't shoot to its sights as beneficial.
Thanks much again!
-
Skychief,I don't know of any rule that says you can't change your spotter but I'm sure Mike or Robin will chime in. The most beneficial way to shoot this is to shoot outside of your spotter and use the same one throughout. My first shoot I shot into my spotter and after cutting a quarter sized hole out of the upper lef it changed my sight picture and I started shooting low right. It didn't dawn on me what was happening until later. Consistency is really important.
Mark
-
I don't know of any rule that says you can't change your spotter, but I would not do it! A lot of the guys are using a specific gun just for this shoot. Just adjust your sights to hit high ,low, left or right, then practice!!! All the guys are getting better at this game each time we hold a shoot. The competition is getting fierce!
Our next shoot is May 17
Mike
-
Next installment? Scoring, maybe? :-\
-
Kermit,
The scoring is done the same as with a chunk match. Each target is measured from X center to center of hole and the total of 10 measurements is the string measure. In this match each of the 10 matches places 1-3 and there is an aggregrate of all 10 that also places 1-3.
Mark
-
So does one measure from center X to farthest edge of hole and subtract half the caliber? Gotta be some method for getting the center point.
-
Kermit, measure is from x-center to center of ball hole. That keeps all calibers equal. There are x-center plastic cards available from the NMLRA that have all common calibers. Just place card uder hole and measure with calipers to x-center. Some clubs have plugs that fit in the caliber hole that allready have a center point on them. Take measurement from that to x-center. Simple!
Mike
-
So is the pyramid of 2" x4"s unattached to the table to allow shooters to adjust?
-
That is correct. You can slide it back and forth to align the proper shooting height for yourself as well as for left or right hand shooters.
Mark
-
Thanks Mark and Mike. I am clear now. Much appreciated!
-
Thanks, Mike. I'm headed for their site now to see if I can locate one. Simple tools are great!
-
Kermit,
Look for "scoring rings" and if you don't find them let me know. I will be glad to send you one.
Mark
-
only place I know that sells them is friendship.. most guys like their bullets to go low dead a 6 oclock so it keeps them out of your view. to the one gentleman that shoots point of impact I have seen guys do this and just put a same colored piece of paper under the hole. I used to shoot the center of white circle then put piece of white under the hole ;saw guys shoot the middle of a black square and put black piece under neath it. what screws you is 30 yards you can see to good and you end up shooting the aiming point or you hole gets to big and you start getting a not sharp sighting image do to all the hole edges .
-
Mark, is this "scoring overlay" what you're talking about?
http://nmlra.org/products-page/general-merchandise/scoring-overlay/
-
Hey everybody
Well, once I finally get a chance to get on. I see that a lot of discussion is happening some really good questions. Looks like Mike and Mark did a good job of answering most of them. Sky chief ask a question about being able to change the aiming point if you hit it. There is no rule that we keep that from happening. I just simply try to keep my rifle, shooting far enough off of POA that I don't have to change it.
Kermit the scoring ring that you found on the MNLRA website is the one that we use. I usually buy them three or four to time, just as a side note a little thing that makes it easier to score. This method is to encourage your shooters to put a thin piece of cardboard, behind their target. This causes the ball to cut a much cleaner hole and makes it much easier for the individual doing the scoring. I usually cut the cardboard down to where she just slightly bigger than the target and then move it around so that the ball will pass through a solid point of the cardboard. If I get where I think it ought to go. I have found that the cardboard, it comes off of a cereal box does not work too bad my favorite cardboard, has been what is on the back of a legal pad. It's a little bit thicker, but it doesn't much nicer job. I have seen a lot of cardboard. It had stuff written on it, such as, Miller light, Budweiser, I don't know where they're getting and stuff.
Keep the good questions coming, guys. I'm going to skip to another post and put up some results. I'll talk to you later.
-
Kermit,
That's the animal. Fits most of the popular calibers.
Mark
-
The shoot. Results are as follows. Keep in mind that the Charlie, Mitch & Alan all had rifle troubles, so their score really doesn't reflect the way they shot. I used my Excel workbook for the first time and it performed really well in keeping the score. But here's the results, such as they are.
1 Bill D 3.628
2 Dave C 4.758
3 Mike Mi 5.610
4 Mark H 5.660
5 Ron B 6.214
6 Randy G 6.644
7 Jerry B 7.505
8 Steve H 7.562
9 Charlie Umstead 7.671
10 Joe C 7.744
11 Byrge 7.756
12 Bo C 7.762
13 Tim S 8.174
14 Jim F 8.619
15 Carl K 9.001
16 Tony N 10.567
17 Mitch W / scratched 14.199
18 Charlie W / scratched 14.457
19 A W C / scratched 15.000
It was really good to see some new faces shooting even had a Warner to stop by just to see what it was all about. From what they said I would look to see them back so until next time, be safe.
-
what a great turn out robin.keep up the good work.
-
As I'm building my own table shoot bench, what angle are the legs at? Are 2x4s cut at the angle? Thanks
-
Colton
The angle you're looking for just 15° do you have a booklet. If not, I will email you the instructions to build your table shoot "Table" as we do not use the bench. Just let me know if you need them and I'll email them to you.
-
Colton,
If you cut the 2x4's diagonally from corner to corner they work just fine. The length of the legs, as drawn, work with that cut.
Mark
-
Robin,
If you don't mind, could you send me the instructions again. I would like to build one and practice. Looking at the scores, I need it!!
Thanks!
~Tony
-
Thanks guys, I have a booklet. That clears things up now. And I meant table not bench. ::)
-

your group looks a lot like ours a lot of GREY BACKS in there where are the youngens? it's hard to get them going. my own grand kids only one of the bunch likes to go with me hunting or out to the range and he is away to school now, a lot of my time is spent alone at the range trying to keep these old eyes sharp. we used to do a blanket shoot where we would all put a prize on the blanket, one fellow misunderstood about the prize or the value of the prize, he set his wife on the blanket and although he tried his best to be last to pick a prize he still had to take her home
-
I would interested in a copy of the instructions to build one of these tables as well. Where can I get such a thing?
This looks like a lot of fun, wondering where I might find out if/where there is a shoot in my area?
-
Dave
I will send you a digital copies of the information, via email at the address you provided in your profile. You can reach me at p.r.warner@hotmail.com please feel free to contact me. Also my phone number will be included in the email.
-
Well it's about two weeks out May 17th we will be having another table shoot at the AW Coon farm. If you need any directions. Please get a hold of me we been having a lot of fun and drawing a broadband of shooters, there will be more tables on the line this time. Things should go a little more quickly. Although we wouldn't want to go too fast and spoil all the Fellowship. Hope to see you all there, we will be paying out the top three in each relay and the top three in the overall aggregate. Hoping to see if you table prizes show up. But it any rate, it will be fun. See you there.
-
Robin,
Looking forward to "trying" to kill some spiders again. See you on the 17th.
Mark
-
If only you guys weren't so ding busted far away...
-
Kermit,
You get here and we'll have something for you to shoot. We'll even "adjust" the sights for you.
Mark
-
Mark, I'd need all the "help" I could get. Since I can't get there, I'll have to work on converting some of these western mountain men.
-
Just wondering how the shoot went last weekend? I was unable to make this time, I hope to next one.
~Tony
-
Tony,
It went very well. The weather cleared about an hour before we started shooting and it was off and on cloudy most of the day. I think there were 16 shooters and Bill Disbro took home the flat meat with a 2.7 string. Mike Madjeski and Ron Borron were chasing him hard. We even had 2 young ladies shooting that took a little good natured ribbing and had a good time. All in all it was another fun time.
Mark
-
Sounds like I missed a good time!!
