Title: Question regarding rust bluing frizzens.
Post by: Rolf on October 29, 2013, 03:57:16 PM
I'm getting ready to rust blue the locks on the long barrel pistols I'm building.

As anyone rust blued frizzens? On another muzzle loading website a member wrote that rustbluing the frizzen face did not effect sparking.  Comments? Experiences?

Best regards

Rolf

Boiling a browned frizzen at 212 degrees (approx.) isn't hot enough to affect the temper of the frizzen.  By not applying solution to the face of the frizzen you won't have any worry there either - not that that would affect it's abillity to spark.  The flint would eventually just scrape its way through the layer of rust to clean metal or you could touch it on a belt sander to remove it in a juffy.

I agree with Matt, I've done it 5 or 6 times and even had the solution get on the face of the frizzen. When I'm done I just polish it bright again. Bob
