Title: B. Bean for Tomkins
Post by: Ken G on April 03, 2014, 03:29:08 AM
Guys,
I haven't been on the site in a while.  I happy to be back and be able to post these pictures.  The owner was kind enough to share these with me and gave me permission to share.  He asked to remain anonymous and I will respect those wishes.  I know he will be viewing comments and I would also like to say Thank You! to him for allowing me to share with the group.

Ken, thanks for posting these pictures.  The rifle is really neat and certainly has a story to tell.  It's a little too 'shot at' for my liking, but well done just the same.  I enjoyed the presentation.

Packdog, good to see you are still out there.
Can we hear about any other particulars? Entry pipe construction? Two piece butt plate? What's the wire on the frizzed spring, to keep it on? Barrel length?

Gorgeous ol' girl! Love the guard and trickers?

Many thanks to the owner for sharing. A great amount of appreciation will come from those who peruse this forum to view this article.

Angus,
I'm still alive and kicking.  I don't have any particulars other than what you see in the pictures.  I asked the owner if he would take a couple of additional pictures when he has a chance.  He said he would but I for one are very happy to see the ones we have.  She's a beauty.  I love the trigger guard and lock.
I can add that Jerry Nobles documented this rifle on page 19 of vol. 1.  B. Bean for I. Tomkins (Isaac Tomkins.  Born Ca 1780. in Washington Co., Tn 1830.

Ken, is the stock really that light on one side and dark on the other? Or is that just the lighting? If true, what does that indicate about the stain?

My understanding is one side of the stock was cleaned by a family member some 50 years back.  I'm sure this explains the difference in color.

Nice rifle and thanks for posting it!

I wondered if it had been hanging in a sunny window for the past hundred years, or if someone had scrubbed the finish off.
The owner should consider having someone put the finish back on the scrubbed side. It'd sure look better and it's pretty easily done.

Ken, I've made a typical (for me) faux pas!  I thought this is a rifle you built, and antiqued.  Lord have mercy!!  Then I read the rest of the posts, and noticed it is in Antique Forum.  OOPS!

It is truly a neat old gun.

Taylor,
I'm honored you might think I could built a gun like this.   ;D

I'm always pleased to see a good iron-mounted rifle posted. And this is a classic by a famous maker, Baxter Bean. With the owner's permission, this should be added to the ALR Library.   Thanks, Ken, for arranging to post this classic East Tennessee rifle.

Very nice!  My thanks to the owner for allowing the pics to be posted, and to Ken for posting them.  My insatiable elephant's child is curious about the specifics of the barrel, but the rest of me is just happy to see the rifle.
