Title: Salem, NC or NC Piedmont style builders?
Post by: Marcruger on May 31, 2014, 05:16:18 PM
Hi Folks,

I am getting closer to ordering a longrifle, and have my sights set on a Salem, NC or Piedmont North Carolina style flintlock longrifle.  I am talking about a Moravian brass/silver mounted rifle, not the western NC/ eastern TN style plain iron mounted guns.  I have settled on a lock, barrel and triggers.

Do y'all know of anyone that specializes in these types of rifles?

I met Ed Wenger at the Williamsburg show, and he certainly has the talent.  Ian Pratt was also suggested to me.

Many thanks in advance.  Best wishes,   Marc

There are a lot of good builders on this board that could fill the bill but either of those two gents you mentioned will do you a bang up job. It pretty much depends on how much you want to spend and how long you can wait to receive your prize.

Thank you so much for the replies.  I did look at Mike Mahagan's NC Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) rifle, and it is spectacular.  It certainly is identifiable, if somewhat nicer quality than any original I have seen.    :)  I agree, time and money are issues, and those I will have to balance.  Please let me know if there is anyone else I should investigate.  Best wishes, and thanks again,   Marc

Did you check Dennis' site:  http://www.gillespierifles.com/

He builds his family's style rifle, and others.
