Im interested in the faux color case hardening as applied to the Art Ressel Hawken on the contemporary builders site. How is that finish done?
-
I didn't find the gun you were referring to. It would be really useful if you could copy the link and paste it here.
-
I don't know which gun you are refering to, but I have had "real" case coloring/hardening done and it's not that expensive.

Keith Neubauer did those for Art
He used a fine tip acetylene torch to create the pattern he wanted and an oil quench. Takes a little skill and practice to get it to look right. See Mike Brooks comments

Color casehardening is easy to come by I would not waste my time coloring with a torch. Color casehardening has benefits other than looks.

My Internet skills are marginal but I think this is the link. Thanks, Arlin Cooper

The link works. So where does one get the real color case hardening?

One source: Heinzelman Heat Treating LLC in NJ.
I had a complete Sharps action and ladder sight color cased by Heinzelman with very happy results.
I've heard only good stuff about Turnbull's shop:

Or you can do it yourself if you like to play with fire. ( I do )

I had some work done by this company over 25 years ago. Don't know what they do now, or if it's the same owners.

That's it! It was Turnbull I have used. Couldn't remember that for anything. ::)

Thanks for the resources and feedback. Arlin

FWIW. I have used http://www.turnbullmfg.com/ for color case hardening and charcoal blueing and was very happy with the work that they did.

Case Color Co owner, Don Menk, retired a few years back and closed the company down. AFAIK know one bought him out or continued his business.
Great guy and it was a great place to get the work done.
Add: RGS Restorations (Rons Gun Shop) to the list of those doing nice color case work

All types of finishing available.
Heinzelmann's in NJ does cyanide case hardening. The color pattern is noticably different than bone & charcoal case hardening.
Heinzelmanns has been around since WW1. (They are the company that A.H.Fox of Phil,PA sent their shotguns to for case hardening when AHF switched to cyanide hardening.)
Early AH Fox was bone/charcoal hardened.
Remington production Parker shotguns were cyanide hardened and show the difference in pattern from the earlier Meriden,Ct produced guns.
Remington did their own cyanide hardening I believe as they used it on small parts as well like triggers and cartridge guides.
All that matters in the shotgun restoration world, but probably not so much here.
But it's a point worth noting I guess if small details like that are of concern and they generally seem to be.
I don't know if potassium cyanide (the common chemical used in blacksmithing cyanide hardening) was available, where, and during what times the M/L's discussed here were made.

Wyoming Armory in Cody can do real case hardening.
