Title: Trigger adjustment screw
Post by: frogwalking on December 04, 2014, 11:42:07 PM
I recently bought an L&R single set trigger.  It works fine.  However, the adjustment screw appears to be a cheap plated pan head screw; 3-48 I think.  Does anyone know where I can find a non-plated machine screw with which to replace it.  (Dad repeatedly told me never to end a sentence with a preposition.)

Thanks,
Frog

Go to he local parts house and ask to see their socket head cap screws. they are designed to use an Allen wrench, but the head can be easily reworked to either a screw slot, or ground square, so a wrench can be used. They are offered in many sizes, and thread counts, and are a grade 8, so you won't break them.

You can burn the plating (do it outside) off with a propane torch if it is ok (it or a plated replacement) other than the plating. If I remember correctly you can also use Muratic Acid to take the plating off.

If you have any birchwood casy cold blue, drop the screw in a bottle cap full and off comes the plating. I use it all the time to un-plate my wood screws.

Dennis is right. Muriatic acid from the home store will take plating off. Do it outside. When I was still building custom furniture, I preferred to replace the soft brass screws that came with brass hardware with blued steel. I stripped and blued screws this way regularly.

Vinegar will remove cad plating. While you are at it, shorten the screw until it just barely clears the trigger plate when turned all the way in.

Tidy-Bowl toilet cleaner will take the plating off too.  Do it outside.  Works quick, under a minute.  Rinse with water.
