Made a set of barrel clamping blocks from this hunk of Bodock (Osage) last night. Had used round tubing Maple blocks in the past, but want to keep them "rounder" for the very thin 4130 tubing for which they are intended.
Chainsawed the tree one county over down-in the flats of Middle (was seeking ramrod material at the time, and Bodock is more "rare" up here), then cut to length for firewood (when wood proved to knotty for RR's), then split this out 4x4" on the splitter when i saw that i might make something of it (knot so knotty). Trued the block with drawknife, ripped with handsaw. Cross cut and grooved with handsaw and chisels.
Then proceeded to snatch a couple of breech plugs.
Also weighed the block to calculate density. 3.5x3.5" at one end, just under 4x4" the other x 16" long, 7.5# on balance scales. Wood works rather nicely green.

That's in the back bedroom which is now becoming a workspace. Since moving it in, the 4" machinist vise now has 4.5" Al (6061) jaws for a kinder, gentler gription. Now to go sweep up all that Al and Bodust.
ALSO saved out some Ash and fitted up a handle for my gouge. Have on hand 3 pieces of Walnut I pulled out of a pals firewood stack, but i got it for figure, as opposed to lack thereof.

Pretty sure that's Bedford, South of Rutherford and I used to live Rutherford, now Cannon which is East of Rutherford.
I had a pretty good pignut hickory log set aside for stick makin' but am afeard that it's too far gone now. Wet weather and work conspired against me getting to split it out. HO well, there's moore. MOF I just found a small walnut stump completely out of the ground and seasoned. Might get a thing or two out of that. I'm done buying wood at the store!

No prob, I can bill by the hour. :P
OF course there's never any "being done" for a doer--now and then one might say--that's ENUFF of THIS, but there's plenty elsewise, always, uh huh. ;)

Buddy brought some firewood to cabin that the power company trimmed from his tree in yard. Guess what's coming down here shortly...

That's a nice find!
Haven't found much for a rifle, but always some pieces for something. Saved a few logs of cherry, cedar, holly and bayberry last year for turkey calls, and a buddy give me a plank of chestnut from his neighbor's wood pile. One of our crew did get a stump of maple a few years ago that was gorgeous burl, enough for a few pistols and horn plugs and knife handles.

Hickory won't last long once it's down. It must taste real good. Seems like every bug there is likes it. I split it out into small enough pieces and put it in the shop rafters till I get ready for it. I was at a relatives hunting camp once and he had a pile of curly maple firewood like you showed. I cringed every time I burned a chunk in the stove.

Know dat! Wife is starting to roll her eyes about my 'keeping' pile, since it's getting bigger than the real 'burning' pile. And I don't have any idea what I'm going to use it on...yet ;D
