I'm in the process of building...or finishing... a swivel breech flinter and carving out the patchbox. I'm wondering what sort of stuff one can cram in there...besides patches? I'm also building in my own release. Appears some had 'secret' release mechanisms (mine too). What secret treasures did they hold? Bill

My flinter has a sliding wooden matchbox, with a grease hole and a larger compartment. I keep tow and a tow worm in the larger one, and char cloth in the grease pit. Using the lock, I can start a fire easily, and the tow worm is used for a quick mid-shoot cleaning of the breech plug.

Treasure: Tradition holds that a Snickers bar is just the thing for a patchbox. I normally keep nothing in a patchbox though since my shooting is pretty much always off the front porch so anything I might require is at hand.

I always thought it was an ash tray for people who smoked in the woods.

I'd like to see that Stoner. Are there any photos up already? I have a bunch of piano keys already. As well as a bunch of Mother Of Pearl. Was that used at all on LR's

I keep patches in my patchbox; both cleaning and a few for shooting, along with jag, ball puller and a spare flint.

Stripped down version of the shooting tool I made for the shooting bag. This version fits easily in the patch box and, in the small leather case, doesn't rattle around. It gives me a ram rod "T" handle, a worm, a jag, a ball puller, a vent pick, and a brass knapping tool. And there is room in the patch box for and extra flint as well.

Picked up a rifle in a trade some years back that had a nice cap, not patch, box on it. Looked the rifle over and made the deal. Low and behold when I opened the cap box there was no hole! The fellow had taken the time to inlet the cap box very nicely but didn't drill out the hole in the stock.

A feather to plug my vent at night when in the woods and sometimes a jag or an extra flint. Sometimes I leave it empty. I like the idea of a dead guy.... My rifle has a folk art horse effigy patchbox so a dead horse might be more appropriate. I also have a horse effigy ball board attached to my bag strap. I call this gun my "hoss rifle."

Sometimes flints, jag, patches. Other times coffee or tea....yes it holds enough to make a corn broiler full

I Just keep a couple of extra flints in any of my patch boxes.

"LOL" Now I want a dead guy in my patchbox.

If'n the Feist don't quit likkin' all the tallow out of the greasehole in my rifle, I'm going to have to have a lid over it-a patchbox.
Then I'll have tallow, tow, worm, and flints in there. Tow/worm/flints in a bag such that they cannot fall completely out if box is opened inadvertently.
