Been working on this one since August and just got to the point I consider it pretty much finished. Just a few more coats of tung oil on the stock, but it's ready for muzzle loader season up here in PA.

Great precarve of sugar maple from Tiger Hunt, a Rice 31" swamped barrel cut back (by Jason) to 28" in .62 cal, L&R Germanic lock and double set trigger. Furniture is steel except for one inch German silver nose cap. Finish is walnut stain with 15 (to date) applications of tung oil.

This one's not too fancy. Wanted to get it done in time to hunt with so no carving, but did inlet a medallion in the wrist and use a rear sight to make it a little more classic German.

Ramrod striped with walnut stain. Working on a second one with charring and tung oil finish. Shoot to point of aim at 50 yards and need to do some more work at 100 with probably some front sight filing.

Ahhhhh! A man after my own heart, a lovely thumping sixty two! Nice popgun*, you will have a lot of fun with this.
*affectionate term for the barrel length challenged amongst us.

Nice looking deer or anything else that might get in the way gun. How much does she weigh and what's your load? I have a less than 7 lb. .58 that's a real thumper on both ends. I've settled on 3 drams 2Fg and a .570 ball. Not too bad on the shoulder and I know for a fact that it will kill deer.

Hey WS, So far I've been zeroing it with a patched .61 round ball over 65gr of 2F. That's the load I use in my smoothbore, except it's a bare ball in that one. There's some recoil to it, but it's not uncomfortable to shoot, bench or standing, even putting 10-15 rounds through it in a practice/zero session. The gun is heavier than I thought it would be, likely because the stock is verrrrry dense wood--a quality piece of maple--and the barrel is a D weight profile. And it could be a chore to tote all day--which is why I like the sling, but perhaps that weight soaks up the recoil and with a nice balance and short length, it points quickly and well. I'm not opposed to increasing the powder load, but don't see the need to do so yet.

I wondered about that and finally just went with what looked best. By the way I call that flower (now on the bottom of the medallion) an "edelweis." If that ticks off King George, so be it.

Actually that would be at the "top" of the medallion...... ;)
It's actually called a rococo shell and was popular in art work of all kinds from the 1760's - 1780's...more or less. BTW, "old King George" was actually of Germanic heritage (Hapsburg?....Hessian? I can't remember) so he probably wouldn't have been offended by an edelweiss anyway. ;D

Hi Mike,
All of the Georges were also rulers of Hanover, Germany. They were of the House of Hanover. The first 2 Georges were more interested in their German lands than England. George III was the first "English" oriented king of the bunch.
