Title: Mark Wheland pistol
Post by: Rolf on March 14, 2009, 12:57:05 AM
There is a great Lehigh inspired pistol made by Mark Wheland on the comtemp.blog. Does anybody have any info on the barrel he used?

Best regards

The barrel is 13 inch, .54 cal, by John Getz,
swamped, 0.9 inch at the breech, tapered to 0.8 inch and 0.9 at the muzzle.
Holds really nice and balanced.

Ditto on Bill Shipman's comments.  Very cool in all aspects.

I studied all the photos for some time before I noticed that the wood has only minimal curl.  The pistol's architecture alone carries it while its carving and engraving put on the icing.  It's a beautiful tribute to the Lehigh masters.

I believe I got the chance to hold this pistol at Lewisburg in Feb.The pics don't do it justice. There is so much going on in such a small package it's incredable.Really a great piece of work!!

Pinyone................PM sent

Thanks for the comments guys. I don't get to build many pistols so this was a little bit of a new challenge for me. I looked at several original Lehigh pistols for archetecture and tried to pull as much detail as room would allow, from the Herman Rupp rifle in RCA vol.1

Mitch......This is the same pistol that I had at Lewisburg.

Paul........I hope the pistol looks alright hanging beside your A. Martin rifle.

Mark,

Does it look good paired up with the rifle?  You know it does.

I think it is about the prettiest thing you have made.  But then again, I am biased because it is mine.

For anyone that wants to see it upclose, it will be at Dixon's on Mark's table and Allen will have the H. Rupp rifle on his.  They are quite the pair and I think they are the best of my collection, built by two of the best gunmakers and friends that one could hope to meet.

What a lovely pair of firearms!  Mark - Allen - both of you are true masters at your craft!
