Hello all,
I submit to you for critique my Type G. Its a .54 call Colerain barrel, Davis Lock, and sheet brass furniture. The patterns for the furniture are from Clay Smith. The project started out as a barrel inletted into the blank with ram rod hole drilled. I did the rest. As you'll see, I went with a "spotted" stock. I used ferric nitrate crystals and alcohol and just painted on small circles. I tried to give it some aging by rubbing back the spots in the buttstock area and then staining. Metal is just blueing rubbed back with steel wool and WD-40. Rammer pipes just have the tabs folded over in the barrel channel, buttplate and escutcheon are nailed on, trigger guard has two screws. I have yet to engrave the buttplate or escutcheon. I do not engrave, but I've started practicing. I'm always open to critiques so that I may improve. And yes, it weighs in around 6.25 lbs ;D Thanks for looking,
Greg

Very nice. Those are fun to build and shoot.

I like it. Nice job on keeping it light, too!

Looks real good, you got the shape right. Beech stock?
"Next time" (or maybe still yet on some of this) Make the underside of you trigger guard finials hollow or concave so they fit against the shape of the stock. The bow should be cupped also. File your butt plate nails flush....probably can only do that if you made tapered nails though. Also, the rear sights on these were only 2 1/2" in front of the breech....pretty !@*%&@ close eh? Too close to see, I don't know why they put them so close. I'm surprised you got it so light with a .54 barrel.

Thanks guy. Mike, actually the stock is maple, so I stained it after I applied the spots to imitate beech that seen some use. I noticed that the rear sights were usually closer. I actually put it 4.5 inches from the breech because while researching this site, I found a type G found in a Florida river. It's rear sight was 4.5 inches from the breech. Its the only reason I did it. The barrel is really small. The breech seems barely over an inch. In at work so I'll have to measure later. I even emailed Colerain because it seemed so small.
Greg
PS I'll work on the triggerguard. I did concave the bow of the guard. Pics don't show it well. I tried just tapping the guard extensions down to the stocks profile.

I form mine in a swage block......you probably don't have one. Sure makes it easy.
